Experienced Mechanical Designer / Engineer
We are seeking an Experienced Mechanical Designer / Engineer to contribute to complex mechanical engineering and design projects with limited day-to-day direction and develop practical, constructable designs for technically demanding facilities.
This is not a desk-only design position. Projects frequently involve complex existing facilities where field investigation is required. You will be expected to understand existing systems, verify field conditions and constraints, and develop practical solutions in coordination with client facility teams and on-site contractors.
Working primarily with a Project Manager, you will support mechanical projects from initial field investigation through design and construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field investigations to verify existing equipment, utilities, system configurations, connection points, routing constraints, available space, and other conditions affecting the design.
- Review existing documentation, identify missing or questionable information, and determine what requires field verification.
- Develop conceptual and detailed designs for HVAC, exhaust, plumbing, process piping, facility utility systems, equipment installations, and facility modifications.
- Lay out and size ductwork, piping, plumbing systems, equipment, and associated components within your areas of expertise.
- Develop clear construction documents that account for constructability, accessibility, maintenance, installation requirements, and existing facility constraints.
- Review equipment and vendor information and develop calculations, sketches, and redlines as required to support the design.
- Coordinate with CAD/Revit designers, other engineering disciplines, clients, facility personnel, contractors, and vendors.
- Participate in site walks, client meetings, design reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Support projects through construction, including RFIs, submittals, field conditions, and design revisions.
- Manage multiple assignments, maintain project schedules, communicate issues, and take ownership of assigned work through completion.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant mechanical design or engineering experience.
- Strong design experience in at least two of the following:
- HVAC
- Plumbing
- Process/industrial piping
- Exhaust/ventilation
- Facility/process utility systems
- Experience with complex or technically demanding facilities such as:
- Healthcare/hospitals
- Industrial/manufacturing
- Laboratories
- High-tech/semiconductor
- Central plants
- Similar technically demanding environments
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, specifications, equipment information, and system diagrams.
- Working knowledge of applicable mechanical and plumbing codes and industry design practices.
- Ability and willingness to perform hands-on field investigation and develop practical designs around verified field conditions.
- Understanding of constructability and how mechanical systems are installed, accessed, operated, and maintained.
- Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, take ownership of assigned work, and communicate effectively with project teams, clients, contractors, and facility personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Revit and/or AutoCAD, or experience working effectively with CAD/Revit production teams.
- Experience with semiconductor/high-tech manufacturing, healthcare/hospitals, industrial/manufacturing facilities, or renovations within occupied or operating facilities.
- Familiarity with P&IDs and process/utility system documentation.
- Experience coordinating mechanical designs across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Mechanical contracting, design-build, construction, or field-coordination experience is a plus when combined with strong design experience.
Work Environment
- Current schedule generally includes two days per week in the office.
- Team members regularly work at client facilities throughout the Valley for field investigations, meetings, and project support.
- Remote work flexibility is available when project responsibilities do not require you to be in the office or at a client site.
- Local travel throughout the Valley is a normal part of the position, with infrequent out-of-state travel.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanical designer or engineer who can work independently, understands how mechanical systems function in real-world facilities, and can take a project from field investigation through design and construction support.
Candidates with experience in HVAC, plumbing, industrial/process piping, exhaust systems, facility utilities, semiconductor/high-tech, healthcare, manufacturing, laboratories, central plants, or complex facility renovations are encouraged to apply.
