Position Summary
Our client, a global leader in advanced autonomous and robotic solutions across multiple industries, is seeking a Mechanical Designer III to support the design, documentation, integration, and release of mechanical systems for heavy equipment, autonomous vehicles, and robotic platforms. This role develops and maintains 3D CAD models, drawings, assemblies, weldments, brackets, mounts, enclosures, and bills of materials while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, test, and field teams to deliver production-ready designs.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, assemblies, weldments, and fabrication documentation.
- Design brackets, mounts, frames, panels, guards, enclosures, sensor mounts, and other mechanical integration components.
- Support mechanical integration of sensors, cameras, LiDAR, radar, GPS/GNSS, compute hardware, electrical panels, antennas, and wiring.
- Perform packaging studies, interference checks, clearance reviews, and installation planning.
- Evaluate designs for fit, function, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and durability.
- Design ruggedized components capable of withstanding vibration, shock, outdoor exposure, and demanding field conditions.
- Create and maintain BOMs, drawing packages, revision records, and configuration-controlled documentation.
- Translate engineering concepts, requirements, sketches, redlines, and field feedback into production-ready designs.
- Support prototype builds, vehicle integration, troubleshooting, field installations, and design updates.
- Collaborate with electrical, systems, manufacturing, test, and field teams to ensure effective system integration.
- Work with vendors, fabricators, and suppliers to resolve drawing, fabrication, installation, and build-quality issues.
- Support engineering change orders, drawing releases, design reviews, and configuration management.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience in mechanical design, product development, vehicle design, heavy equipment, automation, or a related field.
- Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, CAD Design, Manufacturing Technology, or a related discipline.
- Strong experience creating and maintaining 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, assemblies, and mechanical documentation.
- Proficiency with CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, CATIA, Onshape, or similar.
- Experience designing brackets, mounts, weldments, sheet-metal and machined components, guards, covers, frames, and mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, requirements, redlines, and technical markups.
- Understanding of tolerancing, manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, durability, and mechanical fit.
- Familiarity with BOMs, drawing releases, revision control, engineering changes, and configuration management.
- Ability to independently manage moderately complex design assignments with limited direction.
- Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing for autonomous vehicles, robotics, heavy equipment, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or industrial machinery.
- Experience with vehicle integration, retrofit kits, autonomy-kit installation, sensor mounting, or compute hardware packaging.
- Experience designing ruggedized components for vibration, shock, dust, water, and outdoor environments.
- Experience with weldments, sheet metal, machined components, castings, bolted joints, fasteners, and structural mounting interfaces.
- Familiarity with electrical integration requirements, including cable routing, connector access, enclosure mounting, grounding, and sensor placement.
- Experience supporting prototype builds, vehicle retrofits, customer-site updates, or field installation.
- Experience with PLM/PDM, ERP, Jira, Confluence, or similar engineering systems.
- Experience working with suppliers, machine shops, fabricators, and production teams.
