Job summary

Axalta seeks a Mechanical Designer at our Front Royal, VA facility. You will design piping systems, equipment layouts, and minor structural elements for industrial chemical processes, and develop engineering docs in AutoCAD with 3D designs using point-cloud data.

You will collaborate with project engineers, maintenance, and operations, perform field verifications, and ensure drawings meet internal specs and applicable codes. A 3+ year background in mechanical design is expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline preferred.
• Three or more years of experience in mechanical design, fabrication, industrial plant engineering, or related design work.
• Experience with AutoCAD Vault or similar document management system preferred.
• Experience using point-cloud scan data in AutoCAD for 3D design and field verification preferred.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Proficiency with AutoCAD is required; advanced AutoCAD and Vault preferred.
• Knowledge of industrial codes and standards (ASME, API, OSHA).
• Strong understanding of process piping systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop and design process equipment and systems including piping, fixed and rotating equipment, and minor structural platforms.
• Use AutoCAD to produce detailed drawings and maintain engineering documentation, including 3D designs with point-cloud data.
• Develop and revise GA drawings, P&IDs, equipment drawings, utility drawings, and piping isometrics.
• Act as document control contact for engineering drawings at Front Royal site.
• Check out/in drawings, compile markups, and update revisions from internal and external sources.
• Assist with selection and specification of pipe fittings, supports, equipment, and structural elements.
• Collaborate with project engineers, maintenance, operations, contractors, and stakeholders to support design and project execution.
• Perform field walkdowns and verifications to confirm existing conditions and resolve drawing discrepancies.
• Provide technical support during initial design phase of capital and site projects; ensure compliance with internal specs and industry codes.

We are currently looking for a Mechanical Designer to join us at our facility in Front Royal, VA. The Mechanical Designer is a technical member of the Site Engineering Team who supports capital project delivery by designing piping systems, minor structural elements, and equipment layouts for industrial chemical processes. This role also develops and updates engineering documentation in AutoCAD and helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of site engineering records.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and design process equipment and systems, including piping, fixed and rotating equipment, filling and packaging equipment, and minor structural platforms and supports.
• Use AutoCAD to produce detailed drawings and maintain engineering documentation throughout the project lifecycle, including 3D designs that incorporate point-cloud scan data.
• Develop and revise general arrangement drawings, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), detailed equipment drawings, utility drawings, piping arrangement drawings, piping isometrics, and other engineering deliverables.
• Act as one of the primary document control contacts for engineering documentation at the Front Royal Site by helping to identify, organize, and maintain facility engineering drawings.
• Check out/in drawings, compile mark-ups, and update revisions from internal and external sources.
• Assist with the selection and specification of pipe fittings, pipe supports, equipment, and structural elements.
• Collaborate with project engineers, maintenance, operations, contractors, and other stakeholders to support design, development, installation, planning, and project execution.
• Complete administrative duties and provide responsive customer service, including consulting with stakeholders, coordinating schedules, and maintaining required documentation.
• Perform field walkdowns and verification activities to confirm existing conditions, support design accuracy, and resolve drawing discrepancies.
• This includes taking measurements of existing equipment or structures (dimensions, elevations, etc.).
• Provide technical support during the initial design phase of capital and site engineering projects.
• Assist in ensuring designs comply with internal specifications and to a limited extent applicable industry codes and standards such as OSHA and NFPA as well as (mainly for clearances, etc.).
• Support Requests for Information (RFIs) during installation and commissioning and assist with troubleshooting new process equipment and systems.
• Proactively identify and help mitigate safety hazards, code violations, and other issues related to equipment layout and design.
• Support the development of as-built drawings to reflect field changes, completed installations, and current facility conditions in order to ensure accuracy of site engineering documentation

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline preferred.
• Three or more years of experience in mechanical design, fabrication, industrial plant engineering, or related design work involving piping, machinery, or structural systems.
• Experience using AutoCAD Vault or a similar document management system preferred.
• Experience utilizing point-cloud scan data in AutoCAD for 3D design and field verification preferred.
• Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD is required; advanced AutoCAD proficiency and experience with AutoCAD Vault is preferred.
• Other Qualifications: Knowledge of relevant industrial codes and standards, including ASME, API, OSHA, and related requirements.
• Strong understanding of process piping systems.
• Successful completion of a drug screening.
• Successful completion of pre-employment testing.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
• Ability to research policies and provide guidance to on-site personnel and other company locations.
• Demonstrated initiative in identifying needs and implementing solutions with limited supervision.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing systems, processes, and policies.

Physical Demands:

• Willingness to work flexible hours and overtime as needed.
• Ability to climb and work from fixed or portable ladders and scaffolds while wearing required fall protection.
