Job summary

Hickman-Ambrose is seeking a Mechanical Designer to develop mechanical system layouts and detailed CAD/BIM models for building projects in Chesapeake, VA. The role focuses on HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design under guidance from senior engineers.

You will perform basic load calculations, coordinate with electrical and architectural teams, and support the creation of construction documents, submittals, and revisions.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in mechanical design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or other BIM software, and ability to produce clear, detailed engineering drawings.
• Foundational knowledge of building mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection) and familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, local building codes).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including basic load calculations, equipment sizing, and layout optimization for comfort and efficiency.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and clients, including ability to interpret and coordinate architectural and structural drawings.
• Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a consulting or project-based environment.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field; relevant internship or design experience in building systems is preferred.
• Willingness to learn new technologies and practices, with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Role Description

The Mechanical Designer is a full-time, on-site role based in Chesapeake, VA. This role is responsible for preparing mechanical system layouts and drawings for building projects, including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection, under the guidance of senior engineers. Day-to-day tasks include developing detailed CAD or BIM models, performing basic load calculations, coordinating design information with electrical and architectural teams, and incorporating applicable codes and standards. The Mechanical Designer reviews submittals, assists with revisions during construction, and updates documentation to reflect design changes.
