Job summary

HED is seeking an entry-level Mechanical Designer to join its Science and Technology group. You’ll gain hands-on experience in system design, project documentation, and coordination while supporting more experienced engineers.

In this hybrid role, you will learn to model in Revit, contribute to divisions 21–23 specifications, and participate in client and internal team meetings as you develop foundational mechanical engineering skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent) required.
• Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position.
• Strong organizational skills preferred.
• Revit experience preferred.
• Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and email required.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious.
• Ability to work well with others under deadline situations.

Responsibilities

• Primarily working in Revit, modeling components and systems for HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection based on redlines or design guidance.
• Execute project setups in Revit for mechanical models.
• Design, layout and coordination of mechanical equipment and components within a room/plan.
• Participate in mentorship relationships with lead engineers to understand the basics of mechanical engineering for the built environment.
• Autonomously implement delegated design tasks.
• Develop Table of Contents for Division 21, 22, 23 specifications.
• Learn and complete system sizing calculations under guidance.
• Check own work for graphical issues prior to deliverable issuance per Design Standards.
• Collaborate with QAQC per Design Process.
• Attend client meetings and internal team meetings to discuss mechanical requirements.

Position Summary

This role introduces the fundamentals of system design, project documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination while emphasizing hands-on learning. Mechanical Designers at this level primarily support more experienced team members and engage in assignments that build foundational technical skills and familiarity with HED processes and tools.

Essential Functions

• Primarily working in Revit, modeling components and systems - for HVAC, plumbing and/or fire protection systems - based on redlines or design guidance from a project lead
• Execute project setups in Revit for mechanical models
• Design, layout and coordination of mechanical equipment and components within a room/plan
• Participate in mentorship relationships with lead engineers to understand the “how” and “why” of mechanical engineering for the built environment
• Able to autonomously implement delegated design tasks
• Developing the Table of Contents for Division 21, 22, 23 specifications
• Learning and completing system sizing calculations - such as ductwork static pressure, waste and vent pipe sizing - under the guidance of the project designer/lead
• Checking own work for graphical issues to resolve prior to deliverable issuance per HED’s Design Standards.
• Collaborate with the QAQC effort per HED’s Design Process.
• Attend client meetings, for observation, alongside the project designer/lead to collaborate on project mechanical requirements
• Attend and actively participate in internal project team meetings.
• Working in different sectors to gain experience as a mechanical generalist
• Engage in staffing process including estimating time required to complete tasks or assigned work.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent, required.
• Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the position required.
• Strong organizational skills preferred.
• Revit experience preferred.
• Experience with computers, specifically for word processing, spreadsheet use/creation and email required.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible and curious personalities required.
• Ability to work well with others under deadline situations required.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
• Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
