Job description

The Mechanical Design Technician prepares accurate drawings, solid models, specifications, and supporting documents for machinery, mechanical components, tools, equipment, and assemblies. This position uses AutoCAD, Inventor, engineering standards, measuring instruments, reverse-engineering methods, and manufacturing knowledge to create and revise production-ready designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Follow all safety, environmental, quality, and sanitation policies.
• Develop and revise mechanical drawings and solid models using AutoCAD, Inventor, and other approved CAD or modeling software.
• Create schematic, orthographic, sectional, assembly, and detailed component views.
• Apply accurate dimensions, tolerances, materials, fastening methods, notes, and manufacturing requirements.
• Read and interpret customer drawings, specifications, sketches, photographs, and technical information.
• Coordinate with engineering, production, quality, sales, and other employees to resolve design and manufacturing concerns.
• Measure and document parts using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision instruments.
• Reverse engineer mechanical components and assemblies.
• Prepare bills of materials and assign part or material numbers.
• Perform calculations involving dimensions, angles, area, volume, weight, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and conversions.
• Revise designs to correct deficiencies, incorporate changes, and reduce production problems.
• Prepare freehand, field, exact-copy, and photo-based sketches.
• Create and maintain drawing templates, title blocks, solid models, PDFs, and archived records.
• Support technical manuals, inspection documents, and equipment installation information.
• Participate in required job-shadowing and hands-on shop training.

• Knowledge of drawing standards, including borders, title blocks, views, symbols, dimensions, tolerances, and notes
• Understanding of GD&T and applicable ANSI, ASME, ISO, and DIN standards
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Inventor drawing, modeling, layers, attributes, settings, templates, and customization tools
• Knowledge of materials, material properties, tooling, and manufacturing processes
• Understanding of manual and CNC machining, milling, turning, gearing, splining, grinding, heat treating, welding, and fabrication
• Ability to complete in-process inspection documentation, including IPI, LPAP, PPAP, liquid penetrant, and magnetic-particle inspection formsAbility to identify missing or conflicting information and verify drawings for accuracy
• Knowledge of patents, proprietary parts, confidentiality, and related legal requirements
• Understanding of shop capabilities, production workflow, outsourcing, and vendor requirements
• Strong attention to detail, technical research, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
