Job summary

The Toro Company, headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, invites applications for its 2027 Summer Internship Program in design engineering. You will work with a design team to develop, prototype, and refine Toro products, create CAD models and drawings, and present updates to engineering teams.

Open to Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering majors from ABET-accredited programs, the internship offers mentorship, exposure to manufacturing, and hands-on prototyping using additive manufacturing,

Qualifications

  • Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related engineering discipline from ABET accredited university.
  • Strong communication skills across departments and levels.
  • Experience with mechanical drafting and design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, prototype, and refine Toro products as part of a design team.
  • Create CAD models, drawings, prototypes, and design concepts for ongoing projects.
  • Present project updates to engineering teams during design reviews.
  • Collaborate with Test, Quality, Sourcing, and Manufacturing teams.
  • Support prototype development using additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and other rapid prototyping methods.

Job description

The 2027 Summer Internship Program will run from May 17, 2027, through August 6, 2027. Candidates must be available to start on May 17 and participate through the duration of the program.

What Will You Do?
  • Make an impact this summer! As a design engineer intern, you will work as part of a design team alongside experienced engineers to develop, prototype, and refine products.
  • Contribute to the design and development of components used in Toro products.
  • Create CAD models, engineering drawings, prototypes, and design concepts that support ongoing projects and design initiatives.
  • Participate in design reviews and present project updates to engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with other team members from Test, Quality, Sourcing, and Manufacturing.
  • Support prototype development using additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and other rapid prototyping methods.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles for processes such as injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and stamping.
  • Interns will work closely with experienced design engineers and designers who will provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development throughout the summer. Other activities will include job shadowing, potential vendor site visits/tours, and trips to Toro manufacturing plant(s).
What Do You Need?
  • Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and accountability - takes ownership and demonstrates initiative and follow-up skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across business levels and departments, where flexibility, adaptability, and resiliency are important.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Proven relationship building skills, ability to gain and build support for design initiatives.
  • Ability to transfer skills and knowledge from past experience and related technologies to new situations.
  • Experience with mechanical drafting and design.
  • Technical ability in mathematical analysis of physical systems and mechanics.
  • Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office application.
Preferred:
  • Proficient with design software such as CREO ProE, Windchill, CREO mechanism, Creo Simulation, or equivalent FEA and CFD software.
  • Exposure to manufacturing process: injection molding, 3D printing, metal fabrication, welding, forming/stamping, machining, casting.
  • Able to assist in drafting test protocols and communicate them to test engineering.
  • Advanced computer skills with SAP or other ERP systems experience.
