Job summary

Johnson Outdoors, based in Old Town, Maine, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop innovative products from concept through production. You will manage timelines, coordinate with internal teams, and ensure products meet performance and reliability goals.

The role requires a BS in mechanical engineering and about 4 years of experience in consumer product design, with proficiency in schematics, materials, and project management. Domestic/international travel is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 4 years of relevant experience.
• 4 years of mechanical design engineering experience in consumer products.
• Knowledge of materials science incl. plastics, die-casting, metal fabrication.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics and drawings.
• Experience with new product development processes and timelines.

Responsibilities

• Create innovative product designs from concept to production with clear timelines.
• Manage smaller to moderate projects from concept to completion with budget control.
• Perform prototype design experimentation and fabricate rapid/conventional prototypes.
• Conduct feasibility evaluations, testing, and cost estimates for development.
• Troubleshoot design issues post-production and collaborate with teams.
• Write specifications, publish prints, and document testing results.
• Prepare engineering documentation, ECOs, and supplier communications.
• Support operations and suppliers through development stages; occasional travel.
