Job Title: Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - High Speed Rotating Machinery
Pay Rate: $145 to $165K/year (with excellent benefits)
Location: Stanton, CA (Onsite)
Our client is seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to provide hands‑on technical leadership for the development and production launch of advanced high-speed rotating equipment. This position will own key mechanical architecture and component designs while addressing rotor dynamics, vibration, thermal performance, bearings, seals, manufacturability, and system integration. The engineer will work closely with electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and program teams as products progress through validation and production scale‑up. The ideal candidate brings deep experience with turbomachinery or comparable high‑speed electromechanical products and can combine detailed engineering work with technical leadership.
- Lead mechanical architecture and major design decisions for high-speed rotating machinery and associated mechanical systems.
- Develop and refine rotors, shafts, impellers, housings, bearing systems, seals, cooling components, structural assemblies, and pressure‑containing hardware.
- Evaluate rotor dynamics, vibration, thermal behavior, mechanical stresses, tolerances, and other factors affecting product performance and reliability.
- Manage critical mechanical interfaces between rotating equipment, electric machines, power electronics, controls, thermal systems, and supporting structures.
- Conduct engineering trade studies and use test, inspection, and analysis data to guide design decisions.
- Lead mechanical design reviews and technical resolution of issues identified during development, assembly, testing, and production builds.
- Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM principles, and design‑for‑cost considerations to develop robust manufacturable components.
- Support DFMEA, product validation, qualification testing, reliability activities, and formal closure of engineering risks.
- Investigate mechanical, manufacturing, supplier, and test failures using structured root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action methods.
- Work with manufacturing and suppliers to improve component quality, assembly processes, production readiness, and scalability.
- Review and release 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of material, and related product documentation.
- Support precision balancing, high-speed rotor assembly, inspection, and test activities as required.
- Define critical‑to‑quality characteristics and engineering requirements for important components and assemblies.
- Provide technical direction and mentoring to mechanical engineers and designers.
- Establish effective mechanical design practices and contribute to improvements in reliability, manufacturability, cost, and product performance.
- Participate in production ramp activities and drive resolution of issues affecting production‑intent hardware.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant mechanical product‑development experience involving turbomachinery, compressors, motors, generators, refrigeration equipment, or comparable high‑speed electromechanical products.
- Demonstrated experience taking complex mechanical products through design, validation/testing, and production launch.
- Strong hands‑on understanding of high-speed rotating machinery, rotor dynamics, vibration, bearings, seals, thermal management, and precision mechanical systems.
- Experience designing or engineering components such as rotors, shafts, impellers, housings, bearing systems, seals, cooling systems, and structural or pressure‑containing components.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software and relevant engineering analysis tools.
- Practical experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM, DFMEA/FMEA, product qualification, validation, and root‑cause analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate mechanical systems with electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, and other engineering disciplines.
- Experience making technical design decisions and leading engineering activities for complex products.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
- Preferred experience with active magnetic bearings, centrifugal compressors, turboexpanders, high-speed permanent‑magnet machines, thermal‑management/refrigeration systems, precision balancing, or high-speed rotor assembly.
- Familiarity with ASME, API, UL, CE, or comparable engineering/product standards is preferred.
- Experience with manufacturing scale‑up and supplier development is a plus.
- Position requires onsite work in Stanton, CA.
