Job summary

Amazon's Data Services team in Herndon, VA is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design data center mechanical systems from concept through construction documentation. You will define equipment specifications, review submittals, and support construction, commissioning, and turnover activities.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, familiarity with data center mechanical and electrical equipment, and strong MS Office skills.

Qualifications

  • NETA or ASHRAE certification, or commissioning coursework.
  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission‑critical facilities, especially data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
  • Design data center mechanical systems and collaborate with other disciplines to produce construction documents.
  • Create designs that meet quality and budgetary requirements.
  • Specify mechanical equipment with regional vendors and manufacturers.
  • Define site utility requirements in coordination with local utilities.
  • Ensure compliance with city, county, and building codes through engagement with local agencies.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals.
  • Define project scopes and provide technical support during construction phases.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical systems.
  • Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographies.
  • Travel to sites for reviews, field engineering, audits, and startup support as needed.
  • Contribute creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions.
