Job summary

Amazon Data Services, Inc. in the United States (Georgia, Atlanta) seeks a senior mechanical engineer to design, review, and oversee water‑supply, HVAC, and hydronic systems for data centers.

You will ensure code compliance, coordinate with construction and operations, and travel up to 25% to support global projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 10+ years of experience in design engineering or construction, focused on mechanical systems.
  • Experience applying local code requirements, International Code Council standards, and mechanical industry standards.
  • Experience with design review, specification, and submittal review.
  • Must understand construction documents for all trades.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee project work such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service to buildings; coordinate with utilities and fire officials.
  • Coordinate mechanical space requirements, supporting utilities, and equipment locations; provide detailed construction specs for all mechanical trades.
  • Prepare detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems; ensure code compliance.
  • Act as subject-matter expert to enable contractors and operations teams to build, operate, and maintain data centers.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Drive improvement of design standards and project approaches across the organization.
  • Review designs to meet standards and local code requirements; manage risk and submittals.
  • Provide mechanical engineering advice on global projects and support local teams.
  • Coordinate with construction, commissioning, and risk groups to respond to RFIs and value-engineering queries.
  • Ensure construction documents, code compliance, design and installation standards, water-supply evaluation, testing, inspections, and submittal reviews are completed.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
Professional Engineer license or NCEES record

Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply‑chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers. Collaborate across AWS to deliver high‑standards for safety and security while keeping capacity at low cost for customers.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and oversee project‑related work such as water supply analysis and design for fire water service to buildings, and coordinate with utilities and fire officials.
  • Coordinate mechanical system space requirements, supporting utilities, and equipment locations, and provide detailed construction specifications for all mechanical trades.
  • Prepare detailed designs for HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems, reviewing design disciplines for code compliance.
  • Act as subject‑matter expert, ensuring contractors and operations teams have the information needed to build, operate, and maintain data centers.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders, including design, construction, commissioning, operations, vendors, local building and fire officials.
  • Drive improvement of design standards and project approaches across the organization.
  • Review designs in progress to meet design standards, local code requirements, and authorities‑having‑jurisdiction obligations.
  • Provide mechanical engineering advice on global projects and support local engineering teams.
  • Coordinate with construction, commissioning, and risk‑management teams to respond to RFI and value‑engineering queries.
  • Must be responsible for construction documents, code compliance, design and installation standards, water‑supply evaluation, testing, inspections, and submittal review.
  • Must travel up to 25% of the time.
Mandatory Must Mandatories
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in design engineering or the construction industry, related to mechanical systems (hydronics, air‑side duct design, plumbing).
  • Experience applying local code requirements, International Code Council requirements, and mechanical industry standards.
  • Experience with design review, specification, design‑standards development, and submittal review.
  • Must understand construction documents for all trades.
  • Must hold United States citizenship.
Preferred Mandatory Mandatories
  • Experience authoring white papers, technical documentation, and training materials.
  • Experience in design or construction of data centers or critical infrastructure or large‑scale mechanical or electrical plants.
  • Experience developing codes and standards.
  • Experience with performance‑based alternatives to prescriptive mechanical design.
  • Professional Engineer license or NCEES record.

Base salary range: USA, GA, Atlanta – 136,600.00‑184,800.00 USD annually; USA, TX, Austin – 136,600.00‑184,800.00 USD annually; USA, VA, Herndon – 136,600.00‑184,800.00 USD annually; USA, WA, Seattle – 136,600.00‑184,800.00 USD annually.
