Job summary

Alstom in West Mifflin, PA, is seeking a Full-time Onsite Mechanical Design Engineer – Composites to create, update, and integrate composite components for APM platform vehicles and related maintenance vehicles.

You will design and validate parts, perform stack-up analysis, manage interfaces, and support manufacturing, suppliers, and R&D initiatives. A strong background in mechanical design and composites is required, with CATIA V5 and DMU experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in Mechanical Design/Engineering in an industrial environment.
  • 3+ years hands-on experience with composite materials, preferably fiberglass.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (CATIA V5 preferred; SolidWorks/AutoCAD accepted).
  • Familiarity with DMU environments and interface management.
  • Experience in rail, automotive, aerospace, or other regulated industries is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and communication abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain 3D models, 2D drawings, and DMU data for composite components and assemblies.
  • Design and validate composite parts, ensuring quality, cost, and delivery targets.
  • Perform stack-up analysis, clash detection, and interface management.
  • Support manufacturing, industrialization, and supplier activities throughout development and ramp-up.
  • Assess supplier proposals and contribute to sourcing strategy and audits.
  • Lead and support R&D initiatives to develop composite solutions.
  • Resolve technical issues and provide engineering support to projects and customers.
  • Manage deliverables, design reviews, change requests, CAD quality, and BOMs.

Job description

Full-time Onsite Mechanical Design Engineer – Composites (West Mifflin, PA)

The purpose of this position is for creating, updating, and integrating composite related products used on various APM platform vehicles and related maintenance vehicles.

We’ll look to you for:
  • Creating and maintaining 3D models, 2D drawings, and Digital Mock‑Up (DMU) data for composite components and assemblies.
  • Designing and validating composite parts, ensuring compliance with technical, quality, cost, and delivery requirements.
  • Performing detailed mechanical design activities, including stack‑up analysis, clash detection, and interface management.
  • Supporting manufacturing, industrialization, and suppliers throughout development, production ramp‑up, and qualification phases.
  • Assessing supplier proposals and costs, contributing to sourcing strategy, and participating in supplier audits and onboarding.
  • Leading and supporting R&D initiatives to develop innovative composite solutions.
  • Resolving technical issues related to composite parts and providing engineering support to project teams and customers.
  • Managing engineering deliverables, design reviews, change requests, CAD quality, and BOMs while ensuring project milestones and customer requirements are met.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD design tools (CATIA V5 preferred; SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent accepted).
  • Familiarity with DMU environments, 3D integration, and interface management.
  • Experience in rail, automotive, aerospace, or other highly regulated manufacturing industries is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate, implement, and manage engineering change requests.
  • Excellent English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, and cross‑functional teams.
