Job summary

The AIRO Group in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to research, design, test, and document mechanical and structural components for next-generation avionics systems.

You will work with a focused engineering team to ensure designs meet program requirements, including DO-160 and related aviation standards, while collaborating across disciplines and supporting documentation and manufacturing considerations.

Qualifications

  • BSME degree or equivalent.
  • 7-10 years of Mechanical Design Experience.
  • Produce Mechanical designs that meet program requirements.
  • Experience with CAD software.
  • Ability to perform Thermal Analysis.
  • Ability to perform Structural Analysis.
  • Knowledgeable in material composition and properties.
  • Design for Manufacturing.
  • Generation of documentation.
  • Ability to work in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, design, test, and document mechanical structures/components.
  • Improve existing mechanical, electromechanical designs for integration.
  • Apply sound mechanical engineering principles.
  • Plan and direct activities to meet design specs.
  • Conduct tests and record data for evaluations.
  • Lead cross-functional engineering activities.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the research, development, design, testing, and documentation of Aspen Avionics mechanical and structural components.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Research, develop, design, test, and document mechanical structures/components.
  • Maintain and improve existing mechanical, electromechanical components, equipment, and system designs for integration.
  • Apply sound mechanical engineering principles and techniques.
  • Plan, perform, and direct engineering activities to ensure the design, integration, and testing conform to mechanical design specifications and requirements
  • Conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluations or analysis Perform other duties as requested Engineering Leadership.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree (BSME), required or equivalent.
  • 7-10 years of Mechanical Design Experience
  • Produce Mechanical designs that meet program requirements.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Ability to perform Thermal Analysis.
  • Ability to perform Structural Analysis.
  • Knowledgeable in Material composition and properties.
  • Design for Manufacturing.
  • Generation of documentation.
  • Ability to demonstrate a good attitude and ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Provides accurate and timely status on progress of assigned tasks.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledgeable in SolidWorks CAD
  • Experience with the fundamentals of Avionics installation and design.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and analyzing ruggedized avionics enclosures compliant with DO-160 standards.
  • Proven track record in mechanical-to-electrical integration of PCBAs, flex circuits, and thermal interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience aligning mechanical architectures with DO-178 and DO-254 safety requirements.
  • Documented history of leading full-lifecycle execution from prototype build through qualification testing and delivery.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Standing and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds in a safe and prudent manner.
  • Ability to easily move through an approximately 45,000 square foot warehouse building.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to use computer equipment, office equipment.
  • Ability to have manual dexterity of both hands.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Correctable vision and hearing.
  • Ability to work on-site full-time to perform functions of the job.
