Job summary

Ford Motor Company in Long Beach, CA is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design of a novel high‑voltage electro‑mechanical system for our upcoming EV platform. You will collaborate with hardware, electrical, testing, manufacturing, and quality teams to optimize performance, reliability, and cost.

You will prototype, test, and refine assemblies, engage suppliers, develop fixtures, and apply DFX principles.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years in electro-mechanical design for volume production.
  • Experience with PCBA integration into enclosures.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and tool design.
  • Experience with Catia/Enovia.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analyses.
  • Attention to detail and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Hands-on prototyping and testing.
  • Strong fundamentals for vehicle systems design.

In this position…
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of a novel on-vehicle electronic control unit and corresponding mechanism system.

What you'll do...
  • Own the mechanical design and development of a novel, high volume, high voltage electro-mechanical system in Ford’s new upcoming EV platform.
  • Work with the hardware design team to develop a build to print on-vehicle electronic control unit with optimized performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Closely collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical, testing, manufacturing, and quality teams, to ensure that designs encompass DFX principles and meet quality standards.
  • Develop engineering prototypes using rapid prototyping processes and coordinate building and testing for functionality and performance.
  • Engage with suppliers from concept phase to evaluate processes and materials based on manufacturability, quality, cost, reliability, and functional requirements. Provide further support on design improvements to resolve quality issues related to fabrication (die casting, injection molding, sheet metal forming, etc)
  • Participate in development of assembly and test fixtures for all product phases.
  • Develop mechanical functions specifications, support with test planning, execution and documentation based on the design requirements and regulations.
You'll have...
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience designing, developing, and releasing electro-mechanical components and systems for volume production.
  • First hand experience with PCBA integration into mechanical enclosures including PCBA packaging processes like press fit pin process, soldering, conformal coating, etc..
  • Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, materials, and tool design (die casting, injection moulding, sheet metal forming, CNC machining, etc)
  • High level of expertise and proficiency with Catia, Enovia, or similar tools.
  • Experience in application of GD&T and tolerance stack analyses.
  • High attention to detail ensuring organization, accuracy, and quality of design work.
  • Ability to review and act upon simulation and test results to improve the design.
  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high performing team.
  • Hands‑on experience prototyping, building, testing, and launching electromechanical systems.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, and ability to apply broadly to vehicle systems and manufacturing processes.

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in electric vehicle technologies and components such as power conversion electronics, battery packs, traction inverters, HV power distribution systems, charging systems and ECUs
  • FEA and thermal modelling experience
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information to cross functional teams and stakeholders.
  • A system approach to design and development with the desire and curiosity to strive for exceptional delivery execution and continuous improvement.

This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $118,700-$198,500.,

This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $138,800-$232,700.

Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
