Job summary

Barry-Wehmiller Design Group in Fort Worth, Texas is seeking a Department Manager – Mechanical to lead design and delivery of mechanical and utility systems in regulated manufacturing environments. You will manage projects from concept through construction, coordinating with vendors, controls, and other disciplines to ensure GMP compliance and operational readiness.

The ideal candidate holds a PE license, has 15+ years in regulated facilities (food, pharma, biotech), and can travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state.
• 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience delivering food, beverage, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other regulated manufacturing facilities, including HVAC, plumbing, steam, process and clean utility systems.
• Demonstrated experience supporting process and hygienic environments, including exposure to industrial refrigeration (ammonia, CO₂, or freon).
• Strong technical proficiency in mechanical systems design and engineering analysis in regulated environments.
• Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD within a coordinated BIM environment for multidisciplinary design.
• Experience developing technical specifications, design narratives, and construction documentation aligned with GMP and regulated documentation.
• Hands-on construction-phase engineering support with site visits and RFIs.
• Ability to collaborate across disciplines (process, controls, architectural, structural, electrical).
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with clients.
• Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering; Master’s preferred.
• Willing to travel for client meetings, training, and industry events.

Responsibilities

• Support capital projects and implement solutions for our clients.
• Serve as Mechanical Engineer of Record, sealing construction documents in compliance with codes and industry standards for food and pharmaceutical facilities.
• Lead the design and delivery of mechanical and utility systems for regulated manufacturing environments (HVAC, plumbing, steam, process and clean utilities).
• Execute mechanical engineering across the full project lifecycle from conceptual planning to construction phase support.
• Oversee engineering calculations, system analysis, and BIM coordination using Revit and AutoCAD.
• Coordinate with equipment vendors, process partners, and controls teams for equipment selection and utility coordination.
• Collaborate on validation-ready design practices including commissioning and operational readiness.
• Design and oversee mechanical systems for controlled environments with GMP and regulatory alignment.
• Provide construction-phase support including site visits, RFIs, submittals, and issue resolution.
