Job description

Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice

(Anticipated Hiring Wage: $21.64/hour)

This position works under immediate supervision to learn the technical aspects of repairing and servicing city vehicles and equipment while progressing toward full responsibilities of a heavy-duty mechanic through on-the-job training. The following core functions describe the essential duties of this classification. While the broad nature of duties may not change, specific tasks will vary depending on the city's needs.

  1. Assist mechanics in inspecting, diagnosing, and locating mechanical issues on city automobiles and various gasoline and diesel-powered equipment; repair components and replace faulty parts.
  2. Perform preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on vehicles, trucks, and equipment; execute minor repairs and adjustments.
  3. Ensure all duties are performed properly, following departmental policies and procedures.
  4. Inspect, dismount, patch, change, replace, rotate, mount, and balance tires and tubes on all city vehicle classes; assess tire wear and service needs.
  5. Service equipment by changing oil, air, fuel, and hydraulic filters; lubricate chassis; test and replace batteries and alternators; inspect radiators, hoses, and wiring for issues.
  6. Make road calls to service disabled vehicles when necessary.
  7. Maintain detailed records of work performed, parts used, and vehicle repairs; document information into work management software.
  8. Open and close work orders upon job completion.
  9. Transport city vehicles to outside agencies; wash and refuel equipment as assigned.
  10. Utilize power tools, hand tools, and other necessary equipment to perform job duties.
  11. Operate vehicle lifts, jacks, and other large tools for repairs.
  12. Create and maintain a safe work environment, alerting others to hazards.
  13. Perform related duties as assigned.
  14. Support city policies and objectives, working ethically with management and staff; ensure safety procedures are followed.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; one (1) year of paid full-time experience in vehicle and equipment servicing and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge
  • City and department procedures, policies, and procurement rules.
  • Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration regulations.
  • Basic automotive repair, including electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems.
  • Injury prevention, safety standards, and post-accident procedures.
Skills
  • Operating computers, calculators, and office machinery.
  • Using power tools, shop tools, and hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining professionalism in stressful situations.
Pre-employment Requirements

Candidates may need fingerprinting, background checks, employment verification, and possibly drug, alcohol, medical, polygraph, and psychological tests. A valid driver’s license for Arizona is required, along with own hand tools such as wrenches and sockets.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work involves walking, standing, lifting objects weighing 50 to 100 pounds, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead daily. Tasks require visual and manual dexterity, precise measurements, and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movements. Operation of a vehicle is also required.
