Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications
  • Conduct daily inspections to ensure safety procedures are followed and fleet data is accurate and up to date.
  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign work to mechanics; monitor work in progress to ensure repairs are completed efficiently and appropriately.
  • Review work orders to ensure parts, labor, and other costs are accurately charged to the appropriate departments and tasks using fleet management software.
  • Verify work orders are complete and properly closed and that vehicles and equipment are returned to service in a timely manner.
  • Independently make decisions and interpret and communicate policies and procedures when addressing complex or unique situations.
  • Supervise the career development and performance of nine mechanics and two towing and recovery operators, including providing on-the-job training and guidance.
  • Conduct accurate and timely performance evaluations and shop meetings; monitor employee timecards and leave; and address disciplinary matters as appropriate.
  • Maintain technical information related to automotive and equipment repair to assist mechanics with efficiently diagnosing and repairing vehicle and equipment breakdowns.
  • Recommend the purchase of tools, equipment, and machinery that may improve repair efficiency, reduce costs, or enhance shop operations; ensure the shop is maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Serve as the designated contact for assigned departments by providing estimated vehicle or equipment downtime and, when applicable, communicating the problem, cause, and anticipated solution.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, customers, employees, and other departments to support fleet operations and customer service.
  • Administer and negotiate warranty claims, provide required vehicle and equipment specifications, coordinate and negotiate sublet repairs, and ensure all claims and repairs are properly finalized.
  • Utilize fleet management software and Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, to perform administrative and operational duties.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational, written and verbal communication, problem-solving, multitasking, negotiation, and customer service skills.
  • Apply knowledge of parts pricing, warranty requirements, and repair procedures to support efficient and cost-effective fleet maintenance operations.
  • Maintain a valid Virginia State Inspector's License.
  • Maintain a valid Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Preferences
  • Strong organizational and oral/written communication skills.
  • Experience with price negotiation, contracts, and warranty administration.
  • Extensive mechanical experience with pipe washers, street sweepers, cars, and light- to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and accident estimating.
  • Experience establishing and documenting labor time standards for light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong customer service skills and experience.
  • Basic computer skills, including Fleet Focus software, Microsoft Office, and Internet applications.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school or GED plus seven (7) years’ experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as repair and maintenance of automotive or construction equipment in positions such as line mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, or construction mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of pre-employment physical. Commercial drivers license may be required.
