Job summary

Knight Transportation in Kansas City, KS is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to service tractors, trailers, and related equipment. You will perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs across our fleet with emphasis on safety and reliability.

Candidates should have a diploma or technical training in vehicle maintenance, at least 3 years of hands-on experience, and proficiency with diagnostic software.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical diploma or on-the-job training in vehicle maintenance required.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on maintenance experience preferred.
  • Must possess the tools necessary to perform the job.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs on tractors, trailers, and related equipment.
  • Identify damaged components and ensure compliance with OEM and DOT specifications.
  • Disassemble and repair heavy truck components and assist with roadside repairs as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment and mentor junior mechanics.

Must be physically capable of standing for long periods, bending, crawling, climbing, reaching, lifting heavy objects (up to 100 pounds or more depending on the job), and performing repetitive motions with their hands and arms, often while working in tight spaces. This job requires good overall strength dexterity and endurance.

Job Responsibilities: What you will do

Complete a quality preventative maintenance inspection and repairs on all company owned equipment, to include tractors, trailers, refrigerated units and support equipment. May perform lead mechanic duties.

  • Perform inspections to identify damaged or faulty Internal/external components to meet company, OEM and DOT specifications as well as preventative maintenance on all equipment to appropriate specifications (OEM, DOT, KNX, etc).
  • Repair or replace standard Internal/external body components including cab, body panels, glass, mirrors, restraints, safety devices, radio, upholstery, telematics and steering/suspension systems to maximize safety of equipment while in use on public roads.
  • Inspect, analyze, troubleshoot, diagnose and perform minor and/or complex repairs for all equipment.
  • Disassemble, repair and re-assemble of Heavy Truck and Trailer components; including but not limited to; refrigerated units, diesel engines, transmissions, axles and any other components or systems.
  • Perform offsite repairs to include minor to mid level roadside breakdowns as directed by leadership and tire maintenance to include: repairs, failure analysis, coding, identification.
  • May be required to test drive equipment if certified.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • May provide daily oversight to assigned mechanics to ensure productivity and quality goals are achieved.
  • May provide guidance to mechanics related to diagnostics and repair processes/procedures.
  • Proactively work to assist others in achieving the organization's objectives.
Qualifications: What you need to bring
  • 3+ years' experience with on the job training or diploma in vehicle maintenance from vocational or trade school required.
  • Must possess the tools required to accomplish the essential job results required.
  • High School Diploma or combination of training and/or experience required.
  • Drivers license required.
  • Must posses superior customer service skills.
  • Must be able to read and understand repair manuals, understanding and ability to complete/fill tags and repair orders.
  • Must be able to use and learn various diagnostic software used on tractor/trailers.
  • Must possess excellent computer skills.

Pay Range

$23.67 - $32.57 Hourly
