Job summary

North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) is seeking a Mechanic's Assistant to support the maintenance and renewal of wastewater facilities and systems, including pumps, valves, and lift stations.

You will assist mechanics, monitor equipment performance, and perform routine maintenance while following safety guidelines. A Texas driver’s license is required, and an associate degree or trade certification is preferred for advancement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; associate degree or trade certification preferred.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, technology and operations aptitude required.
  • Experience in wastewater operations or maintenance preferred.
  • Texas Driver’s License required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Mechanics and Plant Operators in maintenance and renewal of wastewater assets.
  • Assist in evaluating equipment performance using instrumentation for compliant operations.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on pumps, blowers, valves and related equipment.
  • Follow safety procedures and job plans to ensure safe, consistent work practices.
  • Maintain logs and records; create and resolve service requests in CMMS (Maximo).

Position Summary

The Mechanic's Assistant supports maintenance staff and is trained to perform the maintenance and renewal of wastewater facilities and associated systems including, but not limited to, liquids treatment, solids handling, chemical systems, odor control, and lift stations. This position performs a variety of work assignments to ensure acceptable asset condition, wastewater quality and health and safety standards are met or exceeded.Performs related work as required to ensure efficient and effective facility maintenance. Job Responsibilities
  • Works collaboratively with Mechanics and Plant Operators to conduct treatment maintenance and renewal; assuringoptimalasset efficiency and regulatory compliance.
  • Assistsin the evaluation of equipment performance by observation andutilizinginstrumentation to ensure compliant and efficient operations to facility assets.
  • Assistsin the routine maintenance and repair to existing machinery and equipment. Work may be performed on such process equipment as pumps,blowersand valves. Performs emergency repairs outside routine working schedule as needed.
  • Performs rough carpentry, painting, plumbing,weldingandadditionalmechanical duties asrequired.
  • Notifiesappropriate personnelof needed repairs and renewal.AssistsMechanic in planning, performing, and implementing maintenance procedures for treatment assets, including assisting with inventory control and management.
  • Follows job plans to ensure safe and consistent work practices.
  • Vigilantlymonitorsthe facility for any breaches of security and alertsappropriate agenciesand/or supervisors, asappropriate forthe situation.
  • Assistswithmaintenanceof facility grounds and general housekeeping, as well as the appearance of the facility.
  • Participates in an environmentof Integrity, Trust, Respect, Unity, Safety, and Teamwork.
  • Observessafety guidelines as required by State statutes andas prescribed bythe NTMWD. This includes identifying and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Transportsequipment and receives equipment and standard shipments.
  • Learns andcomplies withapplicable NTMWD policies and procedures.
  • Maintains thorough logs and records in both written and electronic form asrequired.
  • Createsand resolvesservice requests related to plant operations and maintenance activitiesutilizingthe CMMS (Maximo) to coordinate with personnel and support personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED. An associate degree or trade certification is preferred.
  • Mustpossessbasic mechanical, electrical, technology, and operations aptitude.Experience inwastewater operations or maintenance is strongly preferred.
  • Ability tocomprehendand carryout out written and oral instruction.
  • Preference is to obtain a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Wastewateror WaterTreatment or Collectionor DistributionSystemOperator's License.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Develop andmaintainknowledge ofwastewater treatment processes, including the ability to troubleshootwastewater treatment equipment and processes.
  • Must obtainknowledge inwastewater treatment chemical safetyand response procedures, including a certificate in hazardous materials for chemical safety procedures.
  • Must communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with supervisors, peers, to convey information.
  • Maintain basic computer skills, and electrical and mechanical knowledge.
  • Ability to comprehend and carryout out written and oral instruction.
Environmental and Physical Working Conditions

Driving a District vehicle for business will be required. Employees required to drive as part of their job duties are responsible for maintaining a current, valid, and vehicle - appropriate driver' s license of their resident state.

The duties and responsibilities aregenerally performedin a wastewater treatment environment. The position involvessitting (up to 6 hours per day), frequent standing, frequent walking, light to heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.), light carrying, frequent bending and reaching, keyboarding, and telephone operation.Itmayrequire an irregular work schedule and overtime hours. Specific physical conditions require frequent work with chemicals, tools, machinery, moving mechanical parts, etc.

The duties and responsibilities are performed both indoors and outdoors. Moderate to heavy exposure to sun, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, biological hazards, rain, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials and chemicals, machinery, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and water hazards are common. Performs and reviews work at locations that involve hazardous environments requiring the physical ability to wear and work using personal protective equipment (PPE) thatmeet or exceed guidelines such asestablishedby OSHA which may result inphysical discomfort due to temperature, dust, odors,chemicalsand noise. The position may require work in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions withappropriate training.

  • Perform functions requiring manual dexterity and precision movements, continuous or repetitive arm and hand movements, grasping movements, and occasional forceful exertion.

  • Possess visual and muscular dexterity tooperatea motor vehicle (including while towing portable equipment), equipment, hand tools, and a computer.
