THE POSITION

The Mechanic Intern position with the Department of Transportation gives an eager high school student a chance to learn real skills while earning a paycheck. This role lets you work directly with equipment and tools that keep transportation moving every day. You will build confidence as you gain hands‑on experience with repairs and maintenance. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This internship introduces you to essential mechanic practices through hands‑on experience with tools, equipment, and basic repair tasks. As a Mechanic Intern, you will perform the following duties:

• Tool Usage: Use automotive tools, both powered and manual, in a safe and correct manner
• Equipment Repairs: Perform basic repairs on engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, heating systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems
• Maintenance Tasks: Complete routine servicing and follow cleaning procedures for tools, equipment, and work areas
• Direction Following: Follow verbal and written instructions from the County Equipment Manager and Mechanic Supervisor
• Technical Skills: Operate basic scan tools and apply basic computer skills during mechanic tasks

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• High school internship starting Fall of 2026 for the 2026-2027 School Year.
• Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.
• Hours of work for under age 18 is: 28 hours per week during school term and 37.5/40 hours per week during school vacation/breaks.
• If this will be the student's Junior Year the option exists for the student to continue through Senior Year.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
• You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.

Additional Requirements:

• Must be a Traditional high school student or a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved cooperative vocational training program that has prepared the student for the duties and the description of work described in this posting.
• Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
• By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
• Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
