Jekyll Island is seeking a skilled Mechanic III for its Vehicle Maintenance / Operations team. The role focuses on diagnosing and repairing a wide range of gasoline and diesel vehicles, pumps and equipment, including welding and bodywork as needed.

Under limited supervision, you will lead diagnostics, perform preventative maintenance, and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime while ensuring safety standards and DOT compliance.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of equipment or vehicle maintenance and repair experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational cert/degree a plus.
• EPA 609, MACS or equivalent required; ASE certifications preferred.
• CDL Class B or higher preferred; valid license required.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair braking, emission, cooling, electrical, and transmission systems on gas/diesel vehicles and equipment.
• Perform DOT inspections, safety checks, and emissions compliance.
• Respond to field breakdowns and towing logistics; coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.
• Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance, repairs, and time spent per asset.
• Supervise entry‑level mechanics and provide guidance during complex repairs.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.

Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, the Mechanic III services, diagnoses, and repairs a variety of gasoline and diesel automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, utility vehicles, pumps, compressors, generators, and trailers. Duties also include performing welding, auto body maintenance tasks and painting vehicles as necessary.

Description of duties:

• Detects and determines the cause(s) of brake, emission, cooling, exhaust fuel, starting and charging, steering and suspension, transmission, differential, hydraulic, and electrical system problems, corrects cause(s) of the problems, and performs related repairs as necessary on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
• Performs mandatory Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections, safety checks, and emissions compliance.
• Coordinate or personally respond to field breakdowns, roadside service calls, and towing logistics.
• Prioritize and schedule repairs to minimize vehicle downtime.
• Performs advanced diagnostic and oversees diagnostic services of other technicians.
• Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance lubrication and services.
• Changes, repairs, and dismounts and mounts tires.
• Assists Fleet Manager with inventory of parts.
• Performs gas and electric welding, painting, bodywork and fabrication.
• Maintains records indicating all preventive maintenance, repairs, work orders, and time spent on each piece of equipment.
• Performs necessary inspections and repairs when needed out in the field not only within shop.
• Ensures that the service area and maintenance building remain clean and orderly.
• Provides oversight to entry‑level mechanics during complex repair jobs.
• Performs complex diagnosis and repairs.
• Performs general administrative duties including garage management, fuel management, and inventory control systems.
• Familiar with spilled prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC), underground storage tanks, used oil, and used tire disposal regulations.
• Ability to supervise and manager workflow and repair procedures in absence of Fleet Manager
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Completion of relevant vocational certification and/or degree a plus.
• Minimum of five (5) years equipment or vehicle maintenance and repair required.
• May consider any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
• Ability to diagnosis, repair and recover A/C refrigerant required.

EPA 609, MACS or equivalent.

ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications (T1–T8) or ASE Automobile Certifications (A1–A9) are preferred.

• Valid drivers license required, CDL “Class B” or higher preferred.
• Communication skills; written and verbal; documentation, communication with peers, etc.
• Possession of the hand tools required to maintain and repair light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
• Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

• Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• More than 50% of the typical work day may be spent walking, sitting, standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching and using repetitive motions of the wrists, hands or fingers.
• Between 25% and 50% of the typical work day may be spent climbing stairs.
• Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping and touching with more than 50% of the time spent talking and hearing.
• Visual abilities to perform tasks required are to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment and determine the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
• The work is conducted within an inside garage setting, and work is performed outside with exposure to extreme heat, high humidity and occasionally adverse weather conditions as well occasional extreme cold.
• Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts and moving vehicles.
• May be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dusts, mists, or poor ventilation.
• Will be subject to close quarters, such as narrow aisles or passageways/hallways.
• Noise levels are generally considered normal.
