Job description

The City of Puyallup is hiring a full-time mechanic in Fleet Services for the Public Works Department. There are three Mechanics and a Lead in this division. The successful candidate will perform mechanical maintenance on automobiles, pickups, and other light vehicles. The position diagnoses malfunctions, repairs and maintains both gas and/or diesel engines and operates computerized diagnostic equipment used in today's vehicles and makes required repairs as specified. Requires understanding of principles for computerized fuel injection systems, anti-lock braking systems, and other systems used in today's vehicles and diagnosing malfunctions and making repairs as needed. Perform welding and fabrication as needed to maintain equipment using various types of welding and cutting equipment. Duties include record keeping, equipment performance testing and field support to city departments.

  • Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of City of Puyallup autos, trucks, and other light equipment within the fleet services.
  • Maintains, repairs, and services both gas and diesel engines including: drive train, running gear, engines, fuel and water pumps, electrical systems, and other related equipment that is associated with this class of equipment.
  • Rebuilds, modifies and repairs specialized systems and components that may be added to city vehicles for their specialized usage.
  • Assists the Lead Mechanic and supervisor in developing annual cost estimates for repairing and maintaining vehicles and preparation of specifications for new equipment.
  • Assists in the training of city employees in the proper operation and daily servicing of vehicles.
  • Operates a specially equipped mechanic's truck to make standard mechanical repairs and adjustments, or improvise emergency repairs, in the field to all types of vehicles and light equipment.
  • Maintains computerized equipment records and ensures that vehicles are maintained in accordance to city or manufacturers standards.
  • May be assigned other work assignments as required in other classifications within fleet services or within other city departments as required by management.
Knowledge of:
  • Extensive knowledge of the operating principles used in maintaining today's computerized vehicles;
  • Hazardous materials safety precautions pertinent to a vehicle maintenance facility.
  • Learn new technology as required for the maintenance of today's vehicles.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain the confidence of city employees in the quality of the repairs/maintenance of assigned vehicles;
  • Diagnose vehicle and equipment defects and to complete repairs in an efficient, effective manner;
  • Express ideas and technical information clearly and concisely;
  • Demonstrate equipment operations and care techniques to city employees who have varying levels of expertise;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, Department administrators, and representatives of vehicle manufacturers;
  • Learn new technology as required for the maintenance of today's vehicles;
  • Obtain schooling in advanced courses at factory authorized school facilities and obtain ASE certifications in vehicle maintenance.
Education and Experience: Requires two or more years of work experience maintaining and repairing light vehicles (five years preferred) and completion of a vocational school program covering engine repairs and performance, steering and suspension, brakes, electrical and electronics, heating and air conditioning.SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State drivers license.
  • Possession of a standard mechanic's tool set at time of appointment and satisfactory physical condition to perform the tasks of the position.
  • Possession of a commercial driver’s license is desirable.

The positions require the physical strength and agility to lift and/or carry parts and heavy equipment (lifting and carrying 50 pounds), work around loud noises; ability to sustain repetitive hand motion associated with the operation of hand and power tools; must be able to sustain physical effort including the ability to bend, walk, climb in and out of a service pit, kneel, stoop, and operate various motor driven equipment. Must demonstrate normal vision and depth perception and eye/hand/foot coordination in order to perform the duties/tasks associated with the position. Environmental factor: potential risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, confined spaces, electrical hazards and working around mechanical equipment and large tanks.

Hours of Work: The work schedule is typically a 9/80 schedule.
