Job summary

Shelby County Schools is looking for a Mechanic I – Certified to oversee the maintenance and repair of District vehicles. Purpose and Scope

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The position of Mechanic I – Certified works under the direction of the Distribution Area Supervisor and the General Services Supervisor to perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of District vehicles. The position is responsible for diagnosing malfunctions, maintaining, and repairing vehicles to ensure safe operating condition, maintaining tools and equipment, and performing related work as assigned. The position works under general supervisions according to some procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.

  • Implements the general maintenance program for the District’s vehicles.
  • Evaluates driver reports of mechanical malfunctions; assists in determining if vehicles are safe to operate or if out-of-services order is warranted.
  • Assists in determining daily maintenance priorities based on vehicle status, scheduled departures, and vehicle availability.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs mechanical and electrical vehicle malfunctions; provides routine preventive maintenance; adjusts, removes and/or replaces parts and components.
  • Conducts road test of vehicles after the completion of repairs to ensure driver/passenger safety.
  • Orders and picks up parts and materials necessary for maintenance and repair work.
  • Responds to call for service after hours and on weekend as necessary.
  • Instructs helpers or assistant mechanics in maintenance and repair work as assigned.
  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment; keeps shop area clan and orderly.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Prepares accurate and complete vehicle maintenance records, logs, schedules, and reports.
  • Attends training, classes, and workshops as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Secures quotes and ensures accurate and timely work is being completed regarding vehicles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED plus four (4) years of relevant experience in Auto Mechanics; requires an ASE Certification in G1 – Auto Maintenance and Light Repair. Must possess a valid state driver’s license. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree = 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree = 6 years plus required years of experience.
