Job summary

Memphis-Shelby County Schools is seeking a Mechanic I - Certified to maintain and repair District vehicles under the supervision of the Distribution Area Supervisor and General Services Supervisor. The role diagnoses malfunctions, performs preventive maintenance, and ensures safe operating condition of fleet equipment.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED plus four years of auto mechanics experience and an ASE G1 certification, along with a valid state driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus four (4) years of relevant experience in Auto Mechanics.
  • Requires an ASE Certification in G1 - Auto Maintenance and Light Repair.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Implements the general maintenance program for the District’s vehicles.
  • Evaluates driver reports of mechanical malfunctions; assists in determining if vehicles are safe to operate or if out-of-services order is warranted.
  • Assists in determining daily maintenance priorities based on vehicle status, scheduled departures, and vehicle availability.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs mechanical and electrical vehicle malfunctions; provides routine preventive maintenance; adjusts, removes and/or replaces parts and components.
  • Conducts road test of vehicles after the completion of repairs to ensure driver/passenger safety.
  • Orders and picks up parts and materials necessary for maintenance and repair work.
  • Responds to call for service after hours and on weekends as necessary.
  • Instructs helpers or assistant mechanics in maintenance and repair work as assigned.
  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment; keeps shop area clean and orderly.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Prepares accurate and complete vehicle maintenance records, logs, schedules, and reports.
  • Attends training, classes, and workshops as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Secures quotes and ensures accurate and timely work is being completed regarding vehicles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Degree Equivalency Formula
