Job summary

Trailboss Enterprises Inc in Laredo, Texas, is seeking a Motor Vehicle Mechanic I to maintain and repair commercial motor vehicles, including buses and vans. Job description

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic I performs a full range of general maintenance, repair and service activities on Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) buses, vans, automobiles and equipment, in accordance with vehicle and equipment manufacturers technical instructions and generally accepted industry practices. The Motor Vehicle Mechanic I can u se considerable independent judgment in making decisions without the availability of supervision.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Maintain, d iagnose, service and repair various systems that are found on commercial buses, passenger vans, automobiles and equipment, such as engines, mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and manual transmissions, high voltage generators, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The Motor Vehicle Mechanic I Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in the following systems:

• Brakes: Maintains, adjusts, repairs or replaces parts and components associated with hydraulic and air brake foundation brakes and wheel end assemblies.
• Cooling: Diagnose cooling system problems, flushes radiator, replaces hoses and thermostats, repairs or replaces radiator and water pump, fans and fan drives, additives and DCA treatment filters, air intercoolers and oil coolers.
• Drive: Repairs and replaces drive shaft, differential, axles, seals, fluids and additives, manual, automatic and sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all-wheel drive steering axles.
• Electrical: Repairs or replaces fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring. This will include 12 and 24-volt DC systems found on commercial vehicles and equipment.
• Exhaust and Emissions Control: Diagnose exhaust and emission control problems, replace mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, turbochargers, blowers, clamps and pipes.
• Heating and Air Conditioning: Repairs or replaces heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses, and controls; recharges air conditioning systems (HVAC/MVAC).
• Hydraulic: Repairs or replaces pumps, hoses, valves, winches and cylinders.
• Air: Diagnose air brake problems, repairs or replaces compressors, air dryers, air brake components, air brake valves, air tanks and hoses.
• Steering and Suspension System: Diagnose steering, suspension and unusual tire wear problems, repairs or replaces tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, pumps, clamps, air springs/suspensions and related controls.
• Inspection: Follow a checklist of inspection procedures
• Test drive vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and driveability issues.
• Read and interpret diagnostic test results, often by using dials, gauges, and other computer equipment
• Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment by using jacks ramps or hoists
• Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, engines, and other parts of vehicles
• Perform routine maintenance, such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and parts
• Adjust and align wheels, tighten and torque bolts and screws, and attach system components
• Repair or replace malfunctioning components, parts, and other mechanical or electrical equipment
• Disassemble and reassemble equipment and parts
• Performs major general repairs and overhauls of vehicle and equipment engines, transmissions and drive axles under the direct supervision of the Motor Vehicle Mechanic II & III.
• Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment, using fleet maintenance and management software and/or paper forms.
• Prepares work orders and estimates.
• Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.

Performs Annual CMV Inspections.

• U nderstand the inspection standards of Part 393 and Appendix G of the FMCSR.
• Be able to identify defective components
• Have knowledge and proficiency in methods, procedures and tools.

Qualified Brake Inspector

• Understand and be able to perform the brake service and inspection;
• Know the methods, procedures, tools and equipment needed; and
• Be quali fied to perform brake service or inspection by training and/or experience .

May assist in training lower-level workers in mechanical repair techniques.

Performs other work as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of experience and/or certifications will be considered to have met the minimum qualifications.

• Current ASE G-1 Certification
• Current B CDL holder with air brake and passenger endorsements.
• Qualified to perform annual inspections on CMV’s.
• Qualified to perform brake inspections on CMV’s*.
• EPA MVAC 609 Certification
• Ability to enter repair information in fleet maintenance management software.

• *Training that led to attainment of a State or Canadian Province qualifying certificate to perform assigned brake service or inspection tasks, including passage of CDL air brake test in the case of a brake inspection; or
• Competition of a State or federal training program, or earning a State qualifying certificate in commercial motor vehicle safety inspections. Or a combination of other training or experience totaling at least a year.

Education and/or Experience

• Completion of high school, or GED preferred.
• Five years (5) of experience and/or documented vocational/technical training certification assisting skilled trades people in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, buses, vans and automobiles.
• Understand and be able to perform the brake service and inspection;
• Know the methods, procedures, tools and equipment needed; and
• Be qualified to perform brake service or inspection by training and/or experience.

Qualifying brake training or experience includes successful completion of:

• Education and Technical Assistance Program
• A State, Canadian Province, Federal agency, or union training program;
• A State-approved training program;

Must have own tools

Language Skills

• Must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate English.
• Ability to communicate with other mechanics about repair work needed.

Physical Requirements. Able to

• Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs.
• Climb, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, kneel and reach with hands and arms and work in limited spaces.
• Move wrists, hands and/or fingers frequently and regularly.
• Stand for extended periods.
• Work in a shop environment with moderate noise levels.
