Job summary

Town of Abingdon is seeking a skilled mechanic to maintain town trucks and equipment. The role involves disassembling engines and transmissions to inspect wear parts and replacing components as needed.

Responsibilities include conducting inspections and preventive maintenance to keep town vehicles safe and efficient. A high school diploma or GED is required, with CDL-A or ability to obtain within one year and Virginia State Inspection Sticker license likewise obtainable within one year.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Vocational or technical certification in Mechanic Field preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a mechanic preferred.
• Valid Driver's License required.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License A, or ability to obtain within 1 year.
• Virginia State Inspection Sticker License, or ability to obtain within 1 year.

Job description

General Definition and Conditions of Work:

• Perform skilled technical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of Town trucks, vehicles and equipment.
• Duties include, but not limited to disassembling engines, transmissions, or other similar units in order to inspect parts for wear; repairing or replacing parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, bearings and hydraulics. Conducting inspections and participating in a preventive maintenance program to insure the safe and efficient operation of all town vehicles and related equipment.

Education, Experience and Licenses:

• Completion of a standard high school course, or equivalent GED program.
• Vocational or technical certification in the Mechanic Field, electrical, air and hydraulic systems, small engine repair, metal fabrication, and shop maintenance preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a mechanic preferred.
• Possession of a valid Driver's License.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License A, or the ability to obtain one within one (1) year.
• Possession of a valid Virginia State Inspection Sticker License, or the ability to obtain one within one (1) year
