Job summary

Sims Metal in Jersey City, NJ is seeking a Mechanic Helper to support the maintenance team. This role requires mechanical aptitude and a foundational understanding of engines, hydraulics, and electronics, with tasks ranging from oil changes to minor repairs.

The position is physically demanding and involves working around various vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will assist senior mechanics, perform preventive maintenance, and complete required inspections and reports.

Qualifications

• Must have mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform physical tasks.
• Foundational knowledge of internal combustion engines, power transmission, electronics, and hydraulic systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, oil sampling, greasing, and pressure washing equipment.
• Clean radiators and filter housings using compressed air and operate air compressors.
• Operate various vehicles and mobile equipment, including fuel trucks, lube trucks, forklifts, pumps, light towers, power tools, and hoists.
• Complete minor documentation tasks such as inspections, oil sample analysis, and maintenance reports.
• Perform extended manual labor, including lifting, shoveling, stocking shelves, sweeping, and general upkeep of the equipment and work area.
• Follow instructions, policies, and procedures as directed.
• Conduct minor equipment repairs, perform pre-start inspections, and check fluid levels to ensure equipment is safe and ready for operation.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned.
• Must be able to safely work at heights and comply with all fall protection requirements, including the use of personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) when required. Ability to climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, and perform work at heights of up to 50 feet while wearing required fall protection equipment.
