Job description

Responsible for supervisory and skilled mechanical work in directing the operations of a fleet maintenance department, providing repair and maintenance services for automobiles, trucks, and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor, with results reviewed through reports and observation of equipment condition. This is a working supervisory position.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Diagnosing problems with equipment and their sub-systems, including electrical, hydraulic, engine, mechanical, drive train, brake, and other systems to determine repair needs.
  2. Participating in, supervising, coordinating, and performing work in the fleet maintenance shop.
  3. Serving as lead mechanic for general and motor overhaul and repair of automobiles, light, and heavy trucks/equipment.
  4. Consulting with departments to understand vehicle problems, work to be performed, and future repair requirements.
  5. Examining vehicles to assess damage or malfunction.
  6. Estimating time and parts needed, and providing cost analysis for repairs versus replacement.
  7. Assigning tasks to mechanics and reviewing their work for completeness and accuracy.
  8. Reviewing specifications and recommending parts and supplies.
  9. Ordering parts and supplies from vendors as needed.
  10. Extending the safe operating life of equipment, maintaining warranties, ensuring safety, and minimizing repair costs.
  11. Managing inventory of frequently used parts to facilitate repairs and reduce costs.
  12. Updating inventory records and depreciation rates.
  13. Preparing and completing various forms, reports, performance appraisals, accident reports, and activity logs.
  14. Instructing operators and staff on safe operation procedures to minimize malfunctions and downtime.
  15. Responding to complaints and questions, researching problems, and initiating corrective actions.
  16. Possessing excellent interpersonal skills, patience, tact, and a customer-friendly approach.
  17. Understanding purchasing methods and distribution procedures.
  18. Providing training and assistance to employees.
  19. Reporting accidents, injuries, and incidents.
  20. Managing software applications for asset and stock control.
  21. Responding to emergencies and working additional hours as needed.
  22. Performing other duties as assigned and being available for service during natural disasters.
  23. Providing own tools necessary for job functions.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, equipment, and materials related to construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and storm sewer systems.
  • Understanding components, parts, and maintenance needs of equipment.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise work efficiently.
  • Proficiency with survey equipment for line and grade.
  • Ability to prepare accurate reports and remain calm under stress.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting over 45 pounds, climbing, and operating equipment.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience with operation and routine maintenance of construction equipment and public works.
  • Supervisory experience preferred but not required.
  • Leadership by example, positive attitude, strong work ethic, integrity, and stability are essential.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with air brakes and a clean driving record; or ability to obtain a CDL permit within 180 days.
