Job description

Job Overview

Mechanic B Technician – 3-4 years of experience required. Must diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair all vehicles and equipment in service with minimal supervision. Responsible for mentoring Mechanic C technicians on non‑routine repair techniques as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
  • Align front ends and suspension systems.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other critical parts.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment such as pumps and compressors.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
  • Operate valve‑grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Install or rebuild diesel engines.
  • Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
  • Repair and adjust seats, doors, windows, and install and repair accessories.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Specialize in repairing and maintaining engine components such as fuel injection systems.
  • Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or ensure proper operation.
  • Use hand tools and power tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks).
  • Other duties to ensure safe operation and efficiency of the department.
Physical Demands
  • 10% of work inside doors and in air‑conditioned or well‑ventilated facilities.
  • 90% of work outside in varying weather conditions; often performed alone and in remote locations.
  • Frequent standing and walking; ability to sit for up to three hours; walk long distances on uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • Manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination; lift or handle materials up to 75 lbs. without assistance; bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch as required.
  • Corrected hearing and vision within normal range; verbal communication skills.
  • Exposure to heavy traffic, dust, vehicle fumes, noise, cleaning solutions, oils, and other liquids.
  • Travel for company training, meetings, or support missions may be required.
