Associated Terminals - St. Bernard is seeking a skilled mechanic responsible for preventive maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and engines across our Chalmette operations.

You will troubleshoot, diagnose, and correct deficiencies on cranes, hydraulic systems, drives, and diesel/gas/propane engines. Role requires reading schematics, following safety protocols, and supporting maintenance policies to ensure efficient resource use and compliance with laws and company policies.

Qualifications

  • 1 year minimum in industrial maintenance.
  • Experience in stevedoring preferred.

Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The mechanic is responsible for the preventative maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and engines used throughout the operation. The mechanic troubleshoots, diagnoses, and corrects any deficiencies on company related equipment including but not limited to cranes, hydraulic systems, charging/ starting systems, mechanical gear drives, pneumatic controls, and diesel/gas/propane engines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for ensuring the safe operation of all equipment
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and correct equipment using repair manuals, schematics, diagrams, and specs as well as diagnostic procedure
  • Develop, analyze and review a variety of operational reports to examine equipment usage, preventative maintenance, efficiency, quality, and other areas and implements operational changes as required.
  • Assist in developing operating policies and procedures to ensure the efficient use of resources and to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules, quality initiatives, safety targets, efficiency metrics, and other operational measurements are met for the maintenance functions.
  • Ensure compliance with department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Implement and monitor projects that impact specific functions to ensure objectives and timelines are met and works with management or other personnel as required to complete tasks.
  • Assist with reviewing and coordinating general operations with all other functional areas.
  • May perform various corrective and preventive maintenance and repair work that will involve skills within several of the following areas: mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, welding, and other skilled trades depending on operational needs
  • Report ALL incidents through company’s reporting protocol
  • Support company safety initiatives
  • Demonstration of knowledge of all required competencies
  • Perform other duties as required

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 1 year of industrial maintenance experience
  • Working Experience in the stevedoring industry is preferred

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school or equivalent

SKILL/ KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to read/write/communicate in English.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent will work in all weather conditions ranging from warm/hot-cool/cold as well as occasional rain. Will work at different elevations. Noise levels may require hearing protection. May be subjected to conditions which require the use of dusts mask or respirators. Job site will contain light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools. Rotational shift work required. Twelve or more hours per day may be spent in work environment as work dictates.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical nature of the work will vary from day to day based on operational needs; however the job will require the incumbent to be able to perform: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Incumbent will also be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to: Hard Hat, eyewear, safety vests, gloves, masks/ respirators (when necessary) and steel-toe boots. The incumbent is required to utilize fall arrest systems and harnesses. The job duties will be performed at varies height levels.

Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/ or in excess of 50 lbs. frequently, and/ or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSES:

  • TWIC (must be able to attain)
  • Must pass pre-employment drug tests as well as random drug screening
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driver’s record.
