Job summary

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in District 04 HQ Repair Shop seeks a Mechanic 4 to operate electronic scanners, engine analyzers, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscopes, dyn odometers and other testing equipment. The incumbent will perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment and participate in required training programs.

The position requires self-motivation, the ability to work with or without supervision, and the capability to interpret unforeseen conditions.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience or training as a mechanic.
  • Ability to operate electronic scanners and related testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the sequence of work, assigns tasks, and guides lower level mechanics.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Disassembles, diagnoses, and overhauls heavy equipment and complex systems.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical and electronic systems and testing equipment.
  • Performs diagnostic tests to locate malfunctions using extensive vehicle systems knowledge.
  • May perform other duties including emergency/disaster support.

About This Job

This position is in the Office of Operations of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor A. This position serves as a Mechanic 4 for District 04 HQ Repair Shop. The incumbent is required to operate electronic scanners, engine analyzers, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscopes, various testers, meters, plane and two-way radio. Must be knowledgeable in the safe operation of passenger vehicles as well as other equipment operated by the Mechanic 4. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. The incumbent must be self-motivated and able to perform duties many times with or without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. This position also requires the incumbent to make minor repairs and perform necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to perform this task.

Job Duties
  • Directs the sequence of work, assigns tasks, provides guidance and assists lower level mechanics Works with and sets the pace of work, assures that adequate supplies and equipment are available for lower level mechanics.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Applies knowledge of how complex electronic systems affect the operation of mechanical systems in order to determine the nature and extent of repair necessary.
  • Disassembles, diagnose, overhaul, rebuilds and/or repairs heavy equipment or complex systems such as engines, transmissions, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, gear reduction systems, electrical systems, brake systems, exhaust systems, exhaust emission control systems, etc.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic scanners, engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, oscilloscopes, and various testers and meters as well as non-computerized testing equipment used to diagnose equipment/vehicles.
  • Performs diagnostic tests to locate malfunctions of the various systems by using extensive knowledge of vehicle systems developed through years of experience. Performs electrical fabrication of specialized equipment..
  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support.
Position-Specific Details

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional

Compensation: The starting salary for a Mechanic 4 is $22.52/hourly.
