Job summary

Solon Police is seeking a full-time Mechanic to work in the Service department. Responsibilities include performing mechanical work on a variety of equipment, including small engines, cars, and heavy-duty trucks. Applicants should have a High School Diploma or GED, a minimum of six years of related experience, and must have their own hand tools. A Class B CDL is required within one year of hire. The position offers a starting wage of $32.3837/hour without a CDL and comprehensive city benefits.

The City of Solon has an opening for a full-time, Civil Service, Mechanic position in the Service department. The Mechanic works under the direction of the Manager of Fleet Maintenance and the Director of City Services. The position is responsible for mechanical work on all types of equipment including: small engine and equipment, cars, light trucks, heavy-duty trucks and off road equipment.

Requirements Include:

  • Class B minimum CDL (will be required within 1 year of date of hire)
  • Must have own hand tools
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six years of related work experience. Years of formal schooling may be substituted partially for years of experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Be available for emergency call out and weekend platoon shifts due to weather related and urgent circumstances

The successful applicant should also have experience in the following areas:

  • The inspection, repair and maintenance of small engines and equipment; as well as automotive, heavy truck, off road and mechanical equipment and machinery
  • Verifying vehicle performance and correcting vehicle deficiencies
  • Proficient in use of electronic vehicle diagnostic software and fleet software such as R.T.A.
  • Performing hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical work
  • Automotive Service Certificate of Excellence (ASE Certification) preferred

This position is Civil Service and a member of a bargaining unit. The starting wage for this position is $32.3837/hour without a CDL, and $32.9327/hour with a CDL. City benefits include Health Care (Employee participation), prescription, dental, and vision. In addition, benefits include membership in the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System (OPERS), life insurance, vacation, sick leave accruals, and select paid holidays.
