Responsible for the systemic maintenance and repair of all city vehicles as well as specialized mechanical equipment, and related work as assigned. Provide assistance, guidance and direction to other maintenance personnel and co-workers.
- Assist in scheduling all City vehicles and equipment maintenance activities according to a preventive maintenance program.
- Major overhauls of operating systems such as engine, transmission, differential, hydraulic and electric.
- Makes necessary adjustments to achieve correct alignment and clearance.
- Repairs electric system, cooling system, brake system and fuel systems.
- Assembles/installs new equipment and tests it for efficient operation.
- Welding fabricating.
- Designs and fabricates fixtures and attachments.
- Requisitions garage supplies, tools, and inventory.
- Installs plows and spreaders.
- Respond to emergency situations and perform tasks as deemed necessary including assisting in snow removal activities.
- Maintain records and make reports as necessary.
- Assist in setting specifications, getting quotes and inspecting the quality of new vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Preferred Required
High school diploma or equivalent and certification from an accredited diesel/gasoline engine program including brake repair and air-conditioning certification, five years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles is required along with a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License (ABCD). Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification and Wisconsin CDL "N" endorsement are preferred. In addition, the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of engine maintenance.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and special equipment of the automotive trade.
- Ability to operate City owned vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to perform physical work of moderate difficulty.
- Ability to prepare oral and written work orders and time sheets.
- Knowledge of computers and Windows based programs including familiarity with Fleet Software programs and vehicle electronic systems.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management staff, co-workers and the general public.
