Job summary

Hawaii Gas is looking for an Automotive Mechanic to perform repairs and maintenance on a variety of vehicles. This role demands proficiency in mechanical and electrical systems, and ASE certification is required. You will work under the supervision of a foreman or higher-grade mechanic, ensuring all maintenance tasks are completed to high standards.

Qualifications

Job description

Overview

Performs assigned tasks under general supervision of automotive supervisor, and in his absence, the foreman. Assists higher grade mechanics in overhaul/rebuilding/reconditioning engines/electrical systems/transmissions/drive trains/assemblies with all in-progress and completed work regularly checked by higher grade and/or supervision to meet quality specifications/standards. This position offers the opportunity to advance to a Grade 7 Mechanic at $43.19/hr, based on performance, experience, and qualifications.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Performs job tasks from written/oral instructions by shop lead person (foreman) supervisor, or higher-grademechanic; follows specific instructions/methods/procedures in the diagnosis/disassembling/repair/re-building of mechanical engines, equipment, machines, and operating vehicles.
  • Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles such parts as transmissions, clutches, differentials, and final drive assemblies, following prescribed procedures/methods to meet quality specifications of manufacturer and/or supervisor.
  • Adjusts and/or replaces brakes and clutches, replaces broken springs, tie rods, clutches, wheel alignment, repairs leaky radiators and makes minor adjustments to electrical and fuel systems.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks - tunes and lubricates - to ensure continued and safe road operations for all vehicle types/models in employer's fleet inventory.
  • Performs trouble/road calls as dispatched.
  • Keeps work area/garage in a neat/orderly/tidy condition.
  • Reports all hazardous and/or unsafe conditions to supervisor and takes initiative to correct same and wears all prescribed safety equipment.
  • Ability to report to and work at various garage locations as required.

Other Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.
Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • High school education and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.
  • At least three years' experience in the auto mechanic trade or combined equivalent experience in automotive repair and vocational academic schooling.
  • Successfully completed at least 3 years of work in the trade and/or schooling.
  • Has experience in car or truck repairs.
  • Familiar with shop operations.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • State of Hawaii registered mechanic.
  • ASE certifications.
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain a CDL "A" license with Haz-Mat endorsement.
