Job summary

A Tool Shed, Inc. is seeking a Large Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain our heavy rental fleet. You will ensure equipment stays safe, reliable, and rental-ready, minimizing downtime and supporting branch teams.

You must apply sound judgment, strong troubleshooting, accurate documentation, and a commitment to safety and quality. Eligible candidates have experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and routine preventive maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain large construction and rental equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled services per procedures and manufacturer guidance.
• Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines; hydraulic, electrical, cooling, fuel, brake, and steering systems; and related components.
• Service equipment including excavators, skid steers, backhoes, trenchers, loaders, aerial equipment, chippers, and other fleet assets.
• Conduct thorough inspections and identify safety, mechanical, and maintenance concerns.
• Remove or recommend removal of unsafe or non-operational equipment from rental service until repairs are completed.
• Test equipment after repair to verify safe and proper operation.
• Accurately document inspections, diagnosis, labor, parts used, repairs completed, and additional work needed.
• Communicate equipment condition, estimated repair needs, delays, and significant concerns to management.
• Use, maintain, and safeguard company tools, diagnostic equipment, and assigned assets.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop, yard, service vehicle, and work area.
• Follow company safety procedures, equipment-specific requirements, and applicable workplace-safety rules.
• Provide field service or job-site repairs when assigned and operationally necessary.
• Work cooperatively with mechanics, service personnel, branch staff, and management; support branch operations during periods of high demand.
• Perform other duties that are reasonably related to the position and assigned by management.

The Large Equipment Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains A Tool Shed's large rental-equipment fleet. Minimum Qualifications

• Prior experience repairing heavy, construction, agricultural, diesel, or comparable equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant hands‑on experience.
• Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read and use service manuals, diagrams, schematics, diagnostic information, and manufacturer specifications.
• Ability to safely operate applicable equipment for inspection, diagnosis, and testing.
• Ability to prioritize repairs, work independently within assigned authority, and seek guidance when needed.
• Clear communication, accurate record‑keeping, attention to detail, and commitment to safe work practices.
• A valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record under company standards when driving is an essential function of the assigned position, subject to applicable law.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three or more years of heavy‑equipment or construction‑equipment repair experience.
• Equipment‑rental industry experience.
• Manufacturer, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, or heavy‑equipment technical certifications.
• Experience with computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Welding and fabrication experience.

Work is performed primarily in a repair shop and equipment yard and may also occur at customer or job sites. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, uneven surfaces, noise, dust, grease, oils, fuels, exhaust, weather, and temperature changes. Required personal protective equipment must be used, and unsafe equipment or conditions must be reported promptly.
