Job summary

Aerotek is seeking a Machine Mechanic for a contract-to-hire role in Carol Stream, IL. The successful candidate will work in a rebuilding and job shop environment focused on custom machine building, evaluating machines, tearing down for inspection, and repairing equipment to ensure safe, productive operation.

Responsibilities include mechanical troubleshooting, wiring and basic electrical work, welding/fabrication support, and collaboration with the welder/fabricator.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of experience as a maintenance mechanic, machine builder, or custom automotive mechanic/fabricator.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose root causes of failures.
• Experience with hand tools and power tools used in repair and assembly.
• Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.

Job description

This role is for a Machine Mechanic working in a rebuilding and job shop environment focused on custom machine building. You will evaluate machines, perform complete breakdown and tear-downs, identify root causes of failures, and repair and rebuild equipment so that it operates safely and productively. The position involves mechanical troubleshooting and repair of used packaging equipment, using a variety of hand and power tools, and occasionally supporting fabrication and production activities.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate machines upon arrival to determine their condition and required work.
• Perform complete breakdown and tear-down of equipment for inspection and repair.
• Diagnose mechanical issues and determine root causes of equipment failures.
• Troubleshoot and repair used packaging machines to ensure productive operation.
• Rebuild equipment and verify proper function after repairs are completed.
• Utilize hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and similar tools during daily tasks.
• Operate power tools including power drills, impact tools, and other related equipment.
• Read and interpret tape measures accurately to support repair and assembly work.
• Work from verbal instructions and, when available, interpret blueprints and schematics.
• Perform mechanical assembly and disassembly of machine components.
• Support machine building activities, including custom machine builds and one-off parts.
• Assist with preventive maintenance tasks to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues on machines.
• Perform wiring and installation work related to machine assembly and electrical assembly.
• Contribute to welding and fabrication work when needed in support of machine repair or build.
• Work effectively within a job shop environment handling a wide variety of parts, including one-off and custom components.
• Collaborate closely with the welder/fabricator and other team members in the production shop.
• Lift and move parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds as part of daily duties.
• At least 2 years of experience as a maintenance mechanic, machine builder, or custom automotive mechanic/fabricator.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, including diagnosing root causes of equipment failures.
• Proficiency in using hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers.
• Experience with power tools including power drills, impact tools, and similar equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret tape measures accurately.
• Capability to work from verbal instructions to complete repairs and assembly tasks.
• Experience working in a job shop environment with a variety of parts and one-off components.
• Mechanical repair experience including assembly, disassembly, and machine troubleshooting.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely and repeatedly as required.
• Basic understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems as they relate to machinery.
• Experience with preventive maintenance on industrial or mechanical equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or trade school education is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics is helpful.
• Experience with machine building and custom machine assembly.
• Background in welding and fabrication is a plus.
• Experience with electrical assembly and wiring on machinery.
• Familiarity with installation work related to mechanical and electrical components.
• Prior experience as a maintenance technician or in similar roles within industrial or production settings.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carol Stream, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
