Job description

This is a Staff-Level III position for an Engineer within EPRI’s Transmission Operations and Planning R&D group to provide technical support for a variety of R&D projects focused on measurement-based grid monitoring analytics and control, modeling and simulation.

The candidate will perform complex analysis, formulate technical approaches, conduct simulation studies, develop software tools, prepare technical reports/papers, make internal/external presentations and assist in proposal writing. The candidate is expected to assist technical research leads with minimal direction and supervision, and engage in supervised interaction with members and industry.

Duties & Responsibilities

The candidate would:

  • Develop methods and software tools for a variety of synchrophasor-based applications for real-time system operations such as oscillations management and inertia estimation
  • Conduct modeling and simulation studies of large-scale power systems with inverter-based resources and loads. Simulations and modeling are expected to be conducted using electromechanical dynamics simulation tools (e.g. PSS/E) and electromagnetic transients simulation tools (e.g. PSCAD)
  • Support processing of field recorded measurement data and event/disturbance analysis
  • Conduct literature and industry review for state-of-the-art and emerging technologies and corresponding use cases of wide area grid monitoring, protection and control applications
  • Support with use of real-time simulators and hardware-in-the-loop implementations and experiments
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other documentation for clients and stakeholders
  • Support proposal development and business development initiatives as needed
Ideal Candidate
  • Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering with focus on power systems
  • Expertise in power system dynamics, stability and control
  • Expertise with synchrophasor technology and applications
  • Expertise with electromechanical dynamics simulation tools (preferably PSS/E)
  • Experience with electromagnetic transients simulation tools (preferably PSCAD)
  • Experience with modeling of inverter-based resources
  • Experience with real-time simulator and hardware-in-the-loop technologies
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Computer programming languages (preferably Python, Matlab and C++)
  • Ability to manage execution of multiple projects and deadlines effectively
