Job summary

Johnson College in Scranton, PA is seeking a Math tutor to provide resources that strengthen understanding of course material and promote active learning, independence, and motivation. This position is funded through the Carl D. Perkins Act V.

The tutor will respond to and schedule tutoring sessions, foster a welcoming learning environment, and maintain attendance records while supporting students in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and related math courses.

Qualifications

• Subject matter expertise in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and related college math courses.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Strong active listening skills.
• Able to maintain confidentiality.
• High academic achievement in course content.
• Patient, flexible, and able to adapt to various situations and settings.
• Possess strong communication skills and empathy with a diverse student population.

• Establish a friendly, encouraging, and welcoming enviornment during the tutoring session.
• Promote and model high standards for academic success and behavior
• Practice punctuality and encourage student participation during tutoring session
• Willingness to tutor individually or in small group sessions, focusing on both program content and study skills development
• Refer students to other avenues of support
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance and participation
