Job description

Position Summary

The High School Math Teacher (Grades 9-12) is responsible for fostering a deep understanding of core mathematical principles, problem-solving methodologies, spatial reasoning, and real-world analytical applications in a dynamic and rigorous academic environment. This educator will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons that develop students' logical reasoning, quantitative literacy, and critical thinking skills across courses such as Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. By creating a supportive, high-expectation classroom culture, the teacher will inspire students to explore abstract concepts, mathematical modeling, and collaborative inquiry, preparing them for academic success, standardized testing, and future STEM or post-secondary pathways.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Instruction & Curriculum: Plan, prepare, and execute rigorous, standards-based daily lessons (aligned to State/Common Core Math Standards) that accommodate diverse learning styles across grades 9-12. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies-such as direct instruction, inquiry-based learning, mathematical modeling, and collaborative problem-solving-to encourage active student engagement.

  • Assessment & Data Analysis: Design and administer formative and summative assessments, including conceptual quizzes, problem-solving exams, performance tasks, and cumulative projects. Utilize performance data to differentiate instruction, address learning gaps, provide timely feedback, and support varying student skill levels.

  • Classroom & Instructional Technology Management: Establish and maintain a safe, highly structured learning environment in strict accordance with classroom protocols. Integrate modern educational technology, graph-based software, and instructional tools (e.g., graphing calculators, Desmos, GeoGebra) to enhance visual understanding and analytical reasoning.

  • Collaboration & Communication: Actively collaborate with math department colleagues, interdisciplinary teams, and school administration to align curricula, coordinate benchmark assessments, and share instructional best practices. Maintain open, proactive communication with parents and guardians regarding student academic progress, intervention plans, and performance goals.

  • Professional Growth: Consistently participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with secondary mathematics pedagogy, data-driven instruction techniques, and emerging breakthroughs in educational technology and STEM integration.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related STEM field (Master's degree preferred).

  • Certification: Valid state teaching credential/license in Secondary Mathematics (Grades 7-12 or 9-12).

  • Experience: Prior student teaching or professional classroom experience at the high school level is highly desirable.

  • Background: Clean background check and compliance with all district employment requirements.

Technical Skills

  • Learning Management Systems (LMS): Proficiency with platforms like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology.

  • Mathematical & Educational Tech: Ability to integrate digital graphing tools (e.g., Desmos, GeoGebra), graphing calculators (TI-84/TI-Nspire), interactive display boards, and adaptive math software (e.g., DeltaMath, IXL, Khan Academy) into daily instruction and practice.

  • Data & Grading: Competency in using digital gradebooks and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Infinite Campus) to track student performance and monitor standard mastery.

  • Productivity Suites: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) and Google Workspace.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Classroom Management: Proven ability to maintain a productive, structured, and respectful environment during both direct instruction and collaborative group work.

  • Differentiated Instruction: Skill in modifying lessons and problem sets to support English Language Learners (ELL), students with IEPs/504 plans, and advanced math students seeking honors/AP-level rigor.

  • Quantitative Reasoning & Analytical Thinking: Ability to guide students in analyzing complex word problems, understanding logical proofs, identifying numerical patterns, and developing multi-step solutions.

  • Communication & Classroom Culture: Exceptional communication skills, with a strong commitment to fostering a growth mindset, encouraging productive struggle, and building positive relationships with students and families.
