Job summary

Shannon & Wilson is seeking a Senior Materials Testing Technician to lead field and lab testing on CDOT projects and act as a technical resource for engineers and technicians. The role requires extensive hands-on experience with soils, concrete, asphalt, and related materials, plus multiple certifications and independent work capability.

The Senior Technician will manage testing schedules, maintain QA records, train junior staff, and ensure compliance with project specs and Shannon & Wilson's

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; some college education preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years' construction materials testing experience.
• Accreditations in soils, concrete, and asphalt required (WAQTC, ACI, CAPA).
• Able to work hours beyond 40 per week and weekends as needed.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to travel to support other Shannon & Wilson offices.

Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, grout, and related materials.
• Prepare accurate field reports, test results, observations, calculations, sketches, and photos.
• Interpret project specifications and testing requirements.
• Identify non-conforming work and communicate findings to project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
• Coordinate testing schedules and priorities across multiple projects.
• Supervise testing activities and mentor junior staff.
• Assist with training and certification preparation.
• Maintain office accreditations and QA documentation.
• Follow and enforce QA, health & safety, and loss prevention policies.

Job Summary

The Materials Testing Technician is responsible for performing and overseeing materials testing and inspection services on CDOT projects. This position serves as a technical resource to project managers, engineers, and junior technicians while ensuring testing activities comply with applicable standards, project specifications, and quality requirements. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in field and laboratory testing of soils, concrete, asphalt and related construction materials; possesses multiple industry certifications; and can work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee field and laboratory testing of construction materials including soils, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, grout, and related materials.
• Prepare accurate field reports, test results, observations, calculations, sketches, and photographic documentation.
• Interpret project specifications and testing requirements.
• Identify non-conforming work and communicate findings to project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
• Coordinate testing schedules and priorities among multiple active projects.
• Supervise technician testing activities and provide technical guidance and mentoring to entry-level and mid-level technicians.
• Assist with technician training, development, and certification preparation.
• Manage office accreditations related to field and materials testing.
• Maintain testing equipment, calibration records, and quality assurance documentation.
• Follow Shannon & Wilson's Quality Assurance policy.
• Follow and promote Shannon & Wilson's Health & Safety and Loss Prevention procedures and policies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; some college education preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years' of construction materials testing and inspection experience.
• Experience coordinating testing activities and mentoring technical staff.
• Experience working on CDOT projects, preferred.
• Accreditations in soils, concrete, and asphalt required (WAQTC, ACI, and CAPA certifications).
• Ability to work hours in excess of 40 per week and weekends as needed.
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to interact and communicate effectively with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
• Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
• The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
• A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
• Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 50+ pounds.
• Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
• The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant’s education, experience, overall abilities, alignment with the needs of the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Senior-Level Materials Testing Technician typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Technical Services IV or Senior level with compensation ranging from $35.00 to $45.00 per hour.
