Job summary

Shannon & Wilson, an employee-owned geotechnical engineering firm, seeks a Soils Lab Manager to lead laboratory operations and testing. You will supervise technicians, maintain accreditations, and ensure high-quality data delivery for challenging infrastructure projects.

Ideal candidates have a BS in Civil Engineering or Geology, 5–9 years of lab experience, and strong written/verbal communication. Travel to support other offices is required; health, safety and QA policies guide daily work.

Qualifications

• BS Civil Engineering or Geology degree preferred.
• 5 to 9 years of laboratory experience.
• Experience completing geotechnical soils laboratory tests.
• Ability to travel to support other Shannon & Wilson offices.
• Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
• Proficiency with MS Word and Excel; MS Access desirable.
• Ability to work independently with supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical soils laboratory testing (gradations, swell, Atterberg limits, compaction, strength).
• Maintain laboratory accreditation, certifications, and calibrations.
• Use and maintain testing equipment.
• Process test data using computer software.
• Present test results to clients and team.
• Ensure testing meets standards and industry practices.
• Supervise and review lab technicians.
• Travel to field sites as needed.
• Follow QA, health, safety and loss prevention policies.
• Interact with clients, vendors and staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Soils Lab Manager is responsible for performing laboratory testing and supervising the daily operations of the Lab.

Responsibilities

• Perform geotechnical soils laboratory testing, including gradations, swell, Atterberg limits, compaction, triaxial strength, consolidation, and ring shear.
• Maintain laboratory accreditation, certifications, and calibrations.
• Use and maintain scientific testing equipment.
• Process test data using computer software.
• Communicate test progress and present test results.
• Ensure that laboratory testing practices comply with applicable standards and industry practices.
• Supervise and review the work of lab technicians.
• Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels.
• Follow Shannon & Wilsons Quality Assurance policy.
• Follow and promote Shannon & Wilson's Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

• BS Civil Engineering or Geology degree preferred.
• 5 to 9 years of laboratory experience.
• Experience completing geotechnical soils laboratory tests.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment, related supplies, computer hardware and software, and their applications.
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively as appropriate
• Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
• Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.
• The ability to work independently with the appropriate level of supervision.
• The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.
• A valid driver license and insurable driving record.
• Basic computer skills: MS Word, Excel (required); MS Access (desirable).
• Critical thinking and analysis.
• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.
• Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.
• The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant's education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Mid-Level Lab Manager typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Technical Services III or IV level.
