RK&K is currently hiring a talented, team-oriented Transportation Technician to join our Construction, Engineering, and Inspection (CEI) team in the Charlotte area to work on some of the region’s most exciting projects! Projects include greenways, roadways, bridges, and more!

Essential Function

Transportation Technician - Geomaterials Laboratory Technician will be responsible for quality assurance of soils, aggregates and concrete materials used in NCDOT projects operating in Division 10 and Division 9. The candidate would be tasked with testing geomaterial samples according to the procedures of the Materials and Tests Unit of NCDOT. Experience with lab testing procedures in NC, SC, GA, TN, or VA is needed. Certifications or the ability to gain certifications related to soils, aggregates, and concrete are required.

  • Oversight of contractor’s quality control operations
  • Quality Assurance sampling and testing
  • Completion of Testing Reports
  • Electronic recordkeeping

Required Skills And Experience

  • Associate’s Degree or higher in a related field (Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, etc.),
  • OR a minimum of 2 years of experience on transportation-focused construction projects with elements such as laboratory materials testing, earthwork, paving, and/or structures. Those currently pursuing a degree are also invited to apply.
  • Ability to read and interpret contract specifications
  • Ability to read and follow test specifications
  • Ability to maintain thorough documentation
  • Strong abilities with basic math, including area, volume, and the ability to convert between units
  • Excellent driving record
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as required

Candidates must also be trustworthy, responsible, dependable, and willing to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Experience working on NCDOT projects
  • NCDOT certifications:
  • Concrete Field Technician (including ACI Certification)
  • ABC Sampling Technician
  • Borrow Pit Sampling Technician
  • Conventional Density Sampling Technician
  • Introduction to Asphalt Pavements
  • QMS Roadway Technician
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety

Training will be provided as part of this role, including training necessary to become a fully certified NCDOT Technician.
