Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seeks a Materials Technician to perform semi-skilled testing and sampling of highway materials. Duties span inspection and testing on-site and at the Central Laboratory, with work under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares material samples for testing and maintains equipment for physical testing.
  • Performs laboratory testing of aggregates, concrete, and bituminous mixtures using testing equipment and data entry systems.
  • Performs calculations, reports results, notifies supervisor of deviations, and maintains testing records.
  • Records sample and testing data in various software programs.
  • Performs duties per quality systems manuals, including competency evaluations, result verification, and equipment calibration.

Job Location: Central Office, 1617 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO

This position may be filled at one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above, with the intermediate starting salary of $44,729.52, and a senior starting salary of $48,621.60.

What you’ll do:
  • Prepares material samples for testing: and maintains and operates various electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment for physical testing of samples.
  • Performs laboratory testing of aggregates, concrete, bituminous mixtures, or general materials; utilizes computers, electronic systems, and testing equipment for data entry, data collection, analysis, and preparation of laboratory testing reports.
  • Performs calculations, reports test results, notifies supervisor of deviations from standards, and maintains records of testing activities.
  • Records sample and/or testing data in various software programs.
  • Performs duties outlined in the quality systems manuals, including completing competency exam evaluations, verifying results, demonstrating test procedures, and calibrating equipment; assists in quality control/quality assurance reference testing.

  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Job is physically demanding and requires prolonged periods of standing and frequent lifting.
  • Job requires outdoor and/or laboratory work that involves exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment, including (but not limited to) exposure to hazardous chemicals, dust, fumes, hot ovens, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Basic math skills, consistent with high school level algebra, will be necessary to perform many of this title’s duties.
  • Job may require occasional, statewide, overnight travel.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
