Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking a materials specialist at the Central Office in Jefferson City to perform tests and investigations of materials for transportation systems, under direct supervision. This CAREER-LADDER position offers opportunities for advancement from entry to senior levels with posted salaries.

Responsibilities include testing aggregates, concrete and bituminous mixtures, data entry and reporting; lead worker duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • ABET-certified engineering degree required.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification due within 90 days.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation and a medical-physical examination.

Job Location: Central Office, 1617 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO

This position may be filled at one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above, with the intermediate starting salary of $72,691.68, and a senior starting salary of $78,506.88.

If you do not meet the qualifications as listed in the posting, your starting salary will be below the minimum stated salary.

What You'll Do
  • Prepares and tests materials such as aggregates, concrete, bituminous mixtures, or general materials; utilizes computers, electronic systems, and testing equipment for data entry, data collection, analysis, and preparation of laboratory testing reports.
  • Prepares, tabulates, and processes test data for specification compliance; may prepare reports on investigation and develops recommendations for specific problems.
  • Performs duties outlined in the quality system manuals, including completing competency exam evaluations, verifying results, demonstrating test procedures, and calibrating equipment; assists in quality control/quality assurance reference testing.
  • Performs lead worker responsibilities, which may include providing general instruction, assigning and reviewing work, coaching and training, providing guidance and instruction in the proper and most efficient methods of accomplishing tasks, and providing input to the direct supervisor on staffing decisions and performance management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-certified college or university curriculum.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification required within 90 days.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
Special Working Conditions
  • Waiver of minimum requirements may be considered.
  • The official work location for this position is in Jefferson City. Remote work from an approved MoDOT location may be possible.
  • Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
  • Job requires moderate physical activity.Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
  • A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required engineering knowledge, including in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.
