Position Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Materials & Processes Systems Lead to join our JETS II contract team at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.
Responsibilities
- Advise and consult on Materials & Processes (M&P) requirements for both intravehicular (IVA) and extravehicular (EVA) environments, including materials selection, process control, qualification, corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, flammability, toxic offgassing, and process specifications.
- Review and develop hardware, analyze data, support operations, hazard reviews, anomaly resolution, requirements verification, re-flight assessments, and flight acceptance testing.
- Prepare and present technical presentations to program boards.
- Implement M&P system requirements into hardware design and develop verification and validation plans.
- Contribute to program and project specifications, ensuring materials requirements are properly incorporated.
- Review project documentation, specifications, and drawings to verify M&P requirements are met for spaceflight hardware.
- Assess vendor processes for compliance, and recommend necessary changes.
- Guide vendors on qualification and acceptance testing to verify requirements.
- Support inspection and manufacturing processes for human spaceflight systems.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
This position is posted at multiple levels; selection depends on experience, requirements, and business needs.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Metallurgy, Materials Science, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Systems) with 5-10 years of related experience. Licenses or certifications may be required.
- 7+ years of experience in Materials and Processes.
- Knowledge of materials and processes for space applications, including materials selection, design for corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, failure analysis, heat treatment, adhesive bonding, and contamination control.
- Familiarity with metallic and nonmetallic materials specifications and testing.
- Experience reviewing engineering drawings for M&P considerations.
- Broad understanding of M&P across various systems such as propulsion, crew compartments, environmental life support, thermal, and electronic systems.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to critically evaluate manufacturing and material processes.
- Willingness to learn and collaborate across disciplines.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and assess technical risks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred: M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering.
- 10+ years of relevant spacecraft M&P experience.
- Experience in material selection, corrosion prevention, flammability, oxygen compatibility, and contamination control for NASA or aerospace projects.
- Leadership experience in guiding technical teams, especially in human spaceflight systems.
