Job summary

The U.S. Army Sustainment Command in Frederick, MD, seeks a Materials Handler (Forklift/MVO) to receive, unload, and process bulk and bin shipments, maintain inventory, and label and segregate hazardous materials at the Central Receiving Point.

This federal role requires operating forklifts and government vehicles, following safety procedures, and meeting background/suitability checks. You must lift up to 40 lbs, and pass a defensive driving course; probationary period applies.

Duties

• Receives, unloads, and processes incoming shipments of bulk and bin materials and equipment.
• Reports overages, shortages, or damaged items in accordance with established procedures.
• Unpacks and breaks-down shipments as required and stocks in designated areas.
• Conducts warehouse inventories which includes maintaining tally lists during counting operations.
• Operates government vehicles from 1.5 to 5 ton capacity to pick-up and deliver supplies and equipment.
• Operates electric, gasoline, or diesel powered forklift truck in order to lift loads weighing under 10,000 pounds.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Incumbent must obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (Tier 1).
• Incumbent will be required to pass and maintain forklift operator certification within 6 months of employment.
• Incumbent is subject to a medical clearance examination prior to employment. This position may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• Incumbent is responsible for receiving, storing, moving, labeling (including dating) and segregating any hazardous materiel being received and/or shipped out of the Central Receiving Point (CRP).
• Incumbent must successfully complete and initial program of classroom or on-the-job training covering hazardous material handling as well as an annual renewal training.
• This position requires the employee drive a motor vehicle and successfully pass an Army approved defensive driving certification course.
• An appropriate, valid driver's license is required and must be maintained for the position.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary, the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. Lifts and carries items that weight up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Heavier items are moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Moderate physical effort is used in operating forklift hand and foot controls while driving, turning, starting, and stopping the forklift truck and raising, lowering, and tilting loads being moved. Must meet all physical requirements to work in confined areas while reaching/pulling/ placing stocks in storage racks in awkward positions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed both inside and outside in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Outside work will expose the employee to all types of weather conditions. Materials handlers are regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock, or mechanized work areas. May handle boxes that contain hazardous materials. Subject to injury while operating forklift or from mechanical conveyor systems. Employee may be required to wear safety equipment, which is often hot and uncomfortable. Must meet all physical requirements to work in confined areas while reaching/pulling/placing stocks in racks in awkward positions.
