Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Materials Handler for Facilities Services at the Pickle Research Campus. Perform manual tasks to collect, move, transport, and manage surplus materials in support of campus clients.

Responsibilities include loading/unloading furniture and equipment, driving university vehicles, lifting up to 75 pounds, and providing professional customer service. 40 hours/week, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with some overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver’s license; may require Texas license within 30 days if not resident.
  • Basic hand tools knowledge and one year related experience.

Purpose

Perform various manual tasks to collect, move, transport, and manage surplus materials and items in support of campus clients at The University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities
  • Load, transport, unload, and relocate furniture and equipment as part of a team to collect, manage, and dispose of University property in support of campus clients.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 75 pounds, while following safe work practices in support of daily operations.
  • Drive University-owned vehicles, including box trucks, to transport materials safely and efficiently in high-traffic areas. When not driving, assist with ground-guiding and monitor surroundings to support safe vehicle operations.
  • Provide professional customer service to clients, customers, and visitors while representing Facilities Services and adhering to applicable policies and procedures. Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and clients and follow written and verbal directions to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Operate manual and powered warehouse equipment to safely and efficiently handle materials during loading, transport, and unloading activities.
  • Complete required training and certifications using computer-based learning systems and other assigned training methods.
  • Attend and participate in team and departmental meetings.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support organizational goals and objectives, including occasional assistance with University special events.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Possess and maintain a valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 30 days of employment. One year of hands‑on experience with various phases of transportation services, including moving furniture and equipment. Knowledge and experience with basic hand tools. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s Degree. More than one year of experience in varied phases of transportation services, including moving furniture and equipment. Operational experience with a forklift and pallet jack.

Driving Required

This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre‑employment, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return‑to‑duty, and follow‑up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$37,440 + depending on qualifications

Must be comfortable working in a warehouse environment with limited air conditioning and hot temperatures during summer months. Lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds repeatedly. Will twist, grasp, pull, and bend.
Work Shift

40 hours per week. Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., with occasional overtime duty required on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
