Job summary

Lockheed Martin Space is seeking a Lead Materials Engineer to drive materials and processes for tactical hardware, coordinating engineers and suppliers to meet stringent military and industry requirements.

Responsibilities include design reviews, test plan development, and collaboration with design, manufacturing, quality, and procurement teams to achieve program objectives and cost targets.

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in the aerospace industry or related engineering field.
  • Expertise in Parts, Materials, and Processes (PMP) Engineering, including specifications, development, qualification, and manufacturing issues.
  • Experience leading technical development projects.
  • Expertise in corrosion prevention practices.
  • Experience evaluating designs against MIL-STD-11991 and/or NASA-STD-6016 requirements.
  • Willingness/ability to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance; US Citizenship required

Lead Materials Engineer Role

The Lead Materials Engineer role will include a variety of tasks and activities with a primary focus on materials and processes.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinating activities for a group of Materials Engineers who work on tactical hardware.
  • Reviewing technical designs for compliance against military and industry requirements.
  • Recommending changes to designs where necessary to meet requirements.
  • Writing and implementing test plans for qualification of materials and processes.
  • Coordinating with suppliers, subcontractors, and customers.
  • Coordinating with other disciplines such as Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality Engineering, and Procurement.

Evaluates technical and economic factors, recommending engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of process or product by applying knowledge of material science and related technologies.

Reviews plans for new products and factors, such as strength, weight, and cost to submit material selection recommendations ensuring attainment of design objectives.

Plans and implements laboratory operations to develop material and fabrication procedures for new materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards.

Confers with producers of materials, such as metals, ceramics, and polymers, during investigation and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications.

Basic Qualifications
  • Professional experience in the aerospace industry or in a related engineering field.
  • Expertise in Parts, Materials, and Processes (PMP) Engineering, such as areas of specifications, product development, qualification/screening, and manufacturing anomaly resolution.
  • Prior leadership of technical development projects.
  • Expertise in corrosion prevention practices.
  • Prior experience evaluating designs against MIL-STD-11991 and/or NASA-STD-6016 requirements.
  • Willingness/ability to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance; US Citizenship required
Desired Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Physics, Material Sciences, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in coating and plating processes applied to metallic and non-metallic hardware.
  • Expertise in composite material design and manufacturing.
  • Experience participating in major program milestone reviews such as Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews.
  • Prior leadership of technical teams.
  • Current or former Engineering Material Review Board certification.
  • Familiarity with risk management processes.
  • Prior experience evaluating designs against Missile Defense Agency's PMAP
  • Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
  • Active or Current Secret clearance
Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $161300.00 - $299500.00

Benefits offered
  • Annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs may be offered depending on the position. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and can vary from year to year and are tied to a range of performance metrics.
  • For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
