Castelion is innovating in defense development and production with a focus on short, iterative design cycles, rapid testing, and modern manufacturing strategies. We develop next-generation weapon systems to enhance defense capabilities for America and its Allies.

We are expanding our Engineering team supporting thermal protection systems (TPS) for hypersonic flight. The ideal candidate will have a background in materials engineering, emphasizing data-driven process development and optimization. Responsibilities include developing and scaling our ceramic matrix composite (CMC) fabrication line, improving production rates, manufacturability, and material performance. This involves designing and executing material test campaigns, validating new materials and processes, and supporting the integration of CMC components into hypersonic vehicles. Strong problem-solving skills and effective cross-team collaboration are essential.

Responsibilities

  1. Utilize data-driven methods to mature CMC fabrication processes, enhancing material performance, process capacity, and reducing lead times.
  2. Conduct detailed characterization of constituent materials, finished CMC parts, and ceramic coatings.
  3. Lead testing campaigns to evaluate material and component performance in operational environments.
  4. Create material specifications, process documentation, and quality assurance procedures to meet aerospace standards.
  5. Assist in the design and integration of CMC parts into vehicles.

Requirements and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
  • At least 3 years of experience in materials engineering, process development, and characterization, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or energy sectors.
  • Deep understanding of structure-property relationships in ceramics, thermo-mechanical testing, and fabrication processes for composites and CMCs.
  • Motivated team player capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Systematic decision-making skills for process optimization and performance enhancement.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical challenges and develop effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of composite processing, resin/slurry infiltration, thermal curing, and CMC densification methods (PIP, MI, CVI).
  • Experience with material characterization techniques such as microstructural analysis (OM, SEM, EDS, XRD), mechanical testing, thermal conductivity, DSC/TGA, dilatometry, thermal shock, plasma torch, arc-jet.
  • Proficiency with CAD software for design and engineering.
  • Strong background in ceramic matrix composites processing and testing.
  • Experience with high-temperature vacuum furnace processes and CVD.
  • Experience in designing and integrating CMC components.

Leadership Qualities

  • Bias to Action and Creative Problem Solving: Question assumptions, introduce innovative processes, and resolve minor issues independently.
  • High Commitment and Initiative: Passionate about Castelion’s mission, proactive in contributing to technical goals, and accountable.
  • Clear Communication: Proactively report blockers, manage stakeholder relationships tactfully, and communicate clearly in all interactions.
