Job summary

Averro is seeking a Materials Engineer to join its growing materials engineering function in the Greater Chicago Area. You will provide materials expertise within the design process and evaluate properties to support robust component development.

With 2+ years of experience in high‑temperature stainless and carbon steels, experience with irradiation, corrosion, oxidation, and ASME BPVC codes, you will help develop material specifications, qualification plans, and collaborate across mechanical,

Qualifications

  • BS in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical, Nuclear, or related field.
  • Understanding of materials science fundamentals and material behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Provide materials expertise directly within the design process, giving real-time feedback on materials selection as designs are developed
  • Evaluate material properties including strength, fatigue, creep, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and thermal performance
  • Support materials qualification activities for advanced reactor components and systems
  • Develop material specifications, procurement requirements, and qualification plans
  • Assist with material compatibility evaluations for high-temperature nuclear environments
  • Support vendor and supplier technical reviews related to materials and manufacturing processes
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, nuclear, and licensing teams
  • Develop engineering documentation, reports, and technical presentations
  • Support root-cause investigations and materials performance assessments

Job description

Location: Hybrid in the Greater Chicago Area or Fully Remote (Open to remote candidates in select approved US states)

Compensation: $85,000- $215,000 DOE

*Compensation varies based on skills, experience, and location where candidate lives.

Our client is an advanced nuclear energy company developing next-generation reactor systems designed to deliver clean, reliable power to data centers, industrial operations, remote communities, and critical infrastructure. With multiple reactor programs in active development and a Construction Permit Application already submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, this company is moving fast and building the internal team to match. They are building their materials engineering function from scratch and have openings for Materials Engineers ranging from junior to senior level to join their team.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide materials expertise directly within the design process, giving real-time feedback on materials selection as designs are developed
  • Evaluate material properties including strength, fatigue, creep, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and thermal performance
  • Support materials qualification activities for advanced reactor components and systems
  • Develop material specifications, procurement requirements, and qualification plans
  • Assist with material compatibility evaluations for high-temperature nuclear environments
  • Support vendor and supplier technical reviews related to materials and manufacturing processes
  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, nuclear, and licensing teams

Requirements:

  • BS in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related field
  • Understanding of materials science fundamentals, mechanical properties, and material behavior
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with high-temperature stainless steel and carbon steel
  • Experience with irradiation effects, corrosion, oxidation, or aging mechanisms
  • Experience with ASME BPVC Section III and/or Section VIII codes
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques such as microscopy, mechanical testing, or thermal analysis
  • Experience using engineering analysis tools, MATLAB, Python, or data analysis software is preferred
